Limmatschwimmen Zurich 2026: All You Need to Know About Zurich’s Famous River Swim
Saturday 15th August 12 noon – 4.30pm
One of the absolute highlights of summer in Zurich is the Zürcher Limmatschwimmen – a unique event that allows thousands of swimmers to float down the crystal-clear River Limmat through the heart of the city.
Whether you’re a local or visiting Zurich during the summer, taking part in the Limmat Swim is an unforgettable experience and one of the city’s best-loved traditions. It’s more floating than actual swimming and you drift past historic buildings, churches and bridges while enjoying spectacular views of Zurich from the water. Sightseeing with a difference!
What is the Zürcher Limmatschwimmen?
The Zürcher Limmatschwimmen is an annual organised river swim that takes participants approximately 2 km down the River Limmat through the centre of Zurich. The route begins at the historic Frauenbadi Stadthausquai and finishes at Flussbad Oberer Letten, one of Zurich’s most popular riverside bathing areas.
The event attracts thousands of swimmers every summer and has become one of Zurich’s most iconic outdoor events. In 2026, the event celebrates a very special milestone – the 60th anniversary of the Zürcher Limmatschwimmen.

When is the Limmat Swim 2026?
The 60th Zürcher Limmatschwimmen will take place on: Saturday 15th August 2026
Swimming takes place between 12:00 pm and approximately 4:30 pm.
As always, the event is weather and water-condition dependent.

When Will the Event Be Confirmed?
For safety reasons, the organisers monitor both the river conditions and water temperature before confirming the event.
The swim will only go ahead if:
- The water temperature is at least 21°C
- The River Limmat flow remains below 110 m³ per second
The final decision is usually announced at midday on the Tuesday before the event.
When Do Tickets Go on Sale?
Places are limited every year and usually sell out very quickly.
For the 2026 event, advance ticket sales open on:
Wednesday 12th August 2026 at 5:00 pm
If you’re planning to take part, it’s well worth setting a reminder, as tickets often sell quickly.
New for 2026
As the Limmatschwimmen celebrates its 60th anniversary, organisers have introduced a brand-new category called the ewz-Limmatstrom. This exclusive first swimming group allows participants to be among the very first into the water. There are 30 pairs of tickets available, which will be awarded exclusively through the “Mein ewz” customer portal.

A Tradition Celebrating 60 Years
This year’s event marks 60 years of the Zürcher Limmatschwimmen. It’s also the 25th anniversary of the partnership with ewz, Zurich’s electricity provider, making 2026 a particularly special celebration for organisers and participants alike.

Why You Should Experience the Limmatschwimmen
Unlike a traditional race, the Zürcher Limmatschwimmen is all about enjoying the experience.
Participants gently swim or float downstream with the current, passing some of Zurich’s most famous landmarks while soaking up the lively summer atmosphere.
It’s one of the few opportunities each year to experience the city from the middle of the River Limmat alongside thousands of other swimmers.
Whether you’re a confident swimmer or simply enjoy open-water swimming, it’s a fantastic way to experience one of Zurich’s favourite summer traditions.
Can’t Get Tickets?
If tickets sell out, or you’re visiting Zurich at another time during the summer, you can still enjoy swimming in the River Limmat. Zurich has several beautiful river bathing areas, including Oberer Letten, Unterer Letten and the historic Frauenbadi, as well as numerous lakeside bathing areas around Lake Zurich.
