Aarau Carrot Market 2026 – The Famous Rüeblimärt in Switzerland
Everything You Need to Know About the Aarauer Rüeblimärt – 4th November 2026
Did you know there is an entire Swiss market dedicated to carrots? Every year on the first Wednesday in November, the beautiful Old Town of Aarau is transformed for the colourful Aarauer Rüeblimärt – or Aarau Carrot Market.
In 2026, the Rüeblimärt takes place on Wednesday 4th November from 7.30am until 6pm, and admission is completely FREE. It is one of the largest markets of its kind in Switzerland and attracts around 30,000 visitors and approximately 150 market stalls. If you’re looking for an unusual autumn day trip from Zurich, this is definitely one to put in your diary.
What is the Aarau Rüeblimärt?
“Rüebli” is the Swiss-German word for carrot, and at the Rüeblimärt the humble carrot is very much the star of the show. The tradition dates back more than four decades and has become one of Aarau’s best-known annual events. The market takes over the Old Town, centred around the Graben, with stalls overflowing with carrots in an extraordinary variety of colours, shapes and sizes. You’ll find the familiar orange carrots, but also yellow, white, red and purple varieties.
According to the official Rüeblimärt organisers, around 60 varieties of carrots are grown in Switzerland, giving you an idea of just how much more there is to this vegetable than the standard supermarket variety.
Why is Aargau Called the “Carrot Canton”?
Aargau is often affectionately known as Rüebliland – Carrot Country. Interestingly, the exact origin of the nickname isn’t entirely clear. SRF has previously reported that it may even derive from a historical confusion between the Swiss-German words “Rüebli” for carrots and “Räbe” for turnips. Whatever the origins, the carrot has certainly become closely associated with Aargau – and nowhere is that more obvious than at the annual Rüeblimärt.
What Can You Buy at the Aarau Carrot Market?
Don’t imagine this is simply row upon row of ordinary carrots. One of the joys of the Rüeblimärt is seeing just how imaginative the stallholders can be. Alongside beautiful bunches of freshly harvested carrots, you’ll find an incredible selection of carrot-inspired food and products, including Aargauer Rüeblitorte, carrot soup, carrot sausages, carrot pasta, carrot syrup and much more. There are also breads, spices, vegetables and other locally produced specialities.
And of course you really shouldn’t leave without trying a slice of Aargauer Rüeblitorte, the traditional Aargau carrot cake. Many stalls also sell crafts, gifts and decorative items, and the beautifully arranged vegetable displays are almost works of art in themselves.
Don’t Miss the Carrot Decorations
Even if you don’t need to buy any vegetables, the displays alone make the Rüeblimärt worth visiting. Stallholders put a tremendous amount of effort into decorating their stands with elaborate arrangements of carrots, greenery and seasonal produce. In fact, the organisers hold a competition for the most beautifully decorated market stall, with both a professional jury and visitors helping to choose the winner. So make sure you have your camera or phone ready!
What to Eat at the Rüeblimärt
Come hungry, as there is plenty to try. As well as Carrot cake, you’ll also find both sweet and savoury specialities incorporating carrots in some surprisingly inventive ways.
Look out for carrot soup, breads and pastries, carrot pasta, juices, syrups and other regional produce. There are also several food stands that aren’t carrot-related, and the Aarau Markthalle offers additional food and drink from Gaumenglück Catering – useful if you want to sit down for a coffee or a more substantial lunch during your visit.
What Time Should You Visit the Aarau Carrot Market?
The market officially runs from 7.30am until 6pm, but my tip would be to arrive fairly early if you can. With around 30,000 visitors descending on Aarau for a one-day event, it can become extremely busy around late morning and lunchtime. An early morning visit also means you get first choice of the produce and can photograph some of the displays before the streets become too crowded.
Allow approximately two to three hours if you simply want to browse the market, sample a few things and enjoy the atmosphere. If you’d also like to explore Aarau’s Old Town or have lunch, you can easily turn it into a full-day excursion.
A Great Day Trip From Zurich
The Rüeblimärt also makes a particularly easy day trip from Zurich. There are frequent direct trains from Zürich HB to Aarau, and once you arrive at Aarau station the Old Town and market are just a short walk away.Because the market attracts so many visitors, the organisers recommend travelling by public transport rather than driving. There are car parks around the market area, but they can become busy on Rüeblimärt day.
Take Time to Explore Aarau Too
Since you’re already in Aarau, don’t rush straight back to Zurich. The historic centre is really pretty and is particularly famous for its painted roof eaves, known as Dachhimmel. The Old Town is also home to independent shops, cafés and restaurants. You could therefore visit the Rüeblimärt in the morning, have lunch and then spend an hour or two exploring the rest of Aarau.
Special Tours and Events at the Rüeblimärt
It’s not only about shopping. Aarau Info organises special public and group tours on Rüeblimärt day, and additional activities and events take place around the market and city centre throughout the day.
Sustainability at the Aarau Rüeblimärt
Sustainability has also become an important part of the event. The market focuses strongly on regional produce and short transport distances, while organisers promote recycling, responsible consumption and reducing food waste. There is also a reusable tableware system, replacing much of the disposable plastic and cardboard normally associated with large food events. This makes the Rüeblimärt not only a celebration of carrots but also of Swiss agriculture, regional producers and seasonal food.
Is the Aarau Carrot Market Worth Visiting?
I think so – especially if you enjoy traditional Swiss events and markets. It’s colourful, very Swiss and just quirky enough to be memorable. Where else are you likely to see dozens of varieties of carrots alongside carrot cake, carrot soup, carrot pasta and beautifully decorated carrot displays? It also offers a chance to combine one of Switzerland’s more unusual autumn traditions with a visit to the attractive Old Town of Aarau.
