Lucy Christmas Lights Zurich 2026 – Bahnhofstrasse
Lucy Christmas Lights Switch-On: 19th November 2026 at 6pm
One of the most magical signs that Christmas is approaching in Zurich is the switching on of the Lucy Christmas lights on Bahnhofstrasse. Every November thousands of tiny lights illuminate Zurich’s famous shopping street, creating a sparkling canopy stretching for around a kilometre through the heart of the city.
For Christmas 2026, the Lucy Christmas lights will officially be switched on at 6pm on Thursday 19th November 2026. The switch-on traditionally marks the beginning of the Christmas season in Zurich and takes place at the same time as many of the city’s other Christmas illuminations and Christmas markets open. If you’re visiting Zurich at Christmas, seeing the Lucy lights along Bahnhofstrasse is definitely one of the festive experiences not to miss.

The Lucy Christmas Lights on Bahnhofstrasse
In Zurich, the beginning of the Christmas season is marked by the lighting of the Lucy illuminations in the city’s main shopping street. The installation comprises thousands of sparkling light crystals suspended high above Bahnhofstrasse, creating the effect of a huge starry sky.
Zurich Tourism currently describes Lucy as having 11,550 light crystals spread over approximately one kilometre of Bahnhofstrasse. Earlier specifications for the installation list more than 23,000 LED lights, making it an impressive sight while using energy-efficient lighting. The lights stretch along the heart of central Zurich, making this one of the easiest Christmas attractions to combine with Christmas shopping, sightseeing and a visit to the Zurich Christmas markets.
Why Are Zurich’s Christmas Lights Called Lucy?
Have you ever wondered why the Bahnhofstrasse Christmas lights are called Lucy? The name was inspired by the famous Beatles song “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” – very appropriate when you see the thousands of sparkling crystals suspended above the street. Lucy first illuminated Bahnhofstrasse in 2010 and has since become one of Zurich’s best-known Christmas traditions. For many people living in Zurich, Christmas really begins when Lucy lights up the sky.
What Time Do the Lucy Lights Go On in Zurich?
The big moment takes place at 6pm precisely on Thursday 19th November 2026. Crowds gather all along Bahnhofstrasse waiting for the lights to spring into life, and there is always a wonderful atmosphere in the centre of Zurich. If you want to watch the actual switch-on, I would recommend arriving a little earlier as Bahnhofstrasse gets extremely busy around 6pm. Once the initial crowds have dispersed, however, you can wander along Bahnhofstrasse and enjoy the lights at a more leisurely pace.
Tip For Viewing The Lucy Christmas Lights
If your priority is photography rather than seeing the actual switch-on, I personally think it can be even nicer to visit on another evening. Go after dark when Bahnhofstrasse is illuminated, take your time walking towards Paradeplatz and Bürkliplatz and enjoy the reflections of the lights in the shop windows – and, if you’re lucky, on a wet or snowy street. Zurich looks particularly magical at Christmas.
Night Shopping in Bahnhofstrasse Zurich
The Lucy switch-on also coincides with Zurich Night Shopping. On Thursday 19th November 2026, many shops in the city centre stay open until 9pm, giving you plenty of time for some Christmas shopping after watching the lights go on. Bahnhofstrasse and the surrounding streets are home to everything from major department stores and international brands to Swiss watchmakers, jewellery boutiques and smaller specialist stores. So if you need to buy Christmas presents, this is a great evening to combine shopping with all the festive atmosphere.
Zurich Christmas Markets Open on the Same Day
There is another reason why 19th November 2026 is such an important date in Zurich’s Christmas calendar. Many of Zurich’s biggest Christmas markets open on the same day as the Lucy lights, including the markets at Zurich Main Station, Münsterhof, the Old Town, Europaallee and Bellevue. The Christmas market at Zurich Main Station runs from 19th November until 24th December 2026, with more than 100 stalls, festive lights and a huge Christmas tree inside the station concourse.
So you can easily make an evening of it – admire Lucy, do some shopping and then enjoy a Glühwein, raclette or other festive treat at one of Zurich’s Christmas markets.

Christmas Lights Around Zurich
Although Lucy is Zurich’s most famous Christmas illumination, it isn’t the only part of the city to look beautiful at this time of year. Christmas lights can also be found around Rennweg, Neumarkt and Paradeplatz, and wandering through Zurich’s Old Town after dark is particularly atmospheric during Advent. For 2026, Zurich’s Christmas illuminations begin on 19th November, with Zurich Tourism currently listing the main city lights through 4th January 2027.
A Touch of Lucy

Another lovely addition in recent years has been A Touch of Lucy, a walk-in crystal installation which brings the Lucy experience down from the sky to eye level. The installation was introduced at Züghusplatz and allows visitors to step inside a sparkling crystal filled with reflections and Lucy-style lights. It has also become a great Christmas photo spot.

When Is the Best Time to See the Lucy Christmas Lights?
If you want to experience the excitement of the official switch-on, visit Bahnhofstrasse shortly before 6pm on 19th November. However, if you simply want to enjoy the lights and take photos, any evening during the Christmas period is wonderful. For fewer people, try visiting: Monday to Wednesday evenings, rather than Friday or Saturday; early evening shortly after darkness falls; or later in the evening once the shopping crowds have dispersed. December weekends can be extremely busy, particularly around Bahnhofstrasse, Paradeplatz and the Christmas markets.

Lucy runs along Bahnhofstrasse in central Zurich, so it is extremely easy to reach by public transport. If you’re arriving by train, simply leave Zurich Hauptbahnhof / Zurich HB via Bahnhofplatz and you are almost immediately at the northern end of Bahnhofstrasse. You can then walk underneath the lights towards Paradeplatz and continue in the direction of Bürkliplatz and Lake Zurich. Numerous Zurich trams also travel along or close to Bahnhofstrasse.

Whether you go along for the big switch-on, visit for the Christmas shopping or simply take an evening stroll underneath the thousands of sparkling lights, the Lucy Christmas lights on Bahnhofstrasse are one of the highlights of Christmas in Zurich. I still get questions about the Swarovski Christmas Tree which used to adorn Zurich main station, so if you’re interested in nostalgia, you can read all about the Swarovski Christmas tree here (and picture below).
