If you fancy a short break, how about a trip to Austria? We recently visited the scenic area of Seefeld in South Tyrol and stayed at the wonderful Hotel Klosterbräu. The hotel dates back to 1516 and is steeped in history. It was formally a convent with its own church, brewery and wine cellars. Today it is a beautiful and luxurious 5 star hotel still under the attentive care of the family Seyerling who have been at the helm for literally hundreds of years.

The family connection with the hotel is very much apparent. You can really feel the warmth and depth of affection that the Seyrling family hold for this magnificent building. It’s a large hotel with 90 rooms and suites but the welcome you get makes you feel as if you’re also one of the family.

There are lots of little personal touches. From the hand-written welcome note in your bedroom to having your own table assigned in the restaurant with your name on it, and the same waiter who gets to know you during your stay. Nothing is too much trouble.

We stayed in July and the although I normally associate Seefeld with skiing and Winter holidays, I was amazed at how much there is to do in Summer. The scenery is simply stunning and it is a great place for hiking, biking, golf and of course enjoying the 3,500 sq metres of the spa and wellness facilities.

There is even an e-car at the disposal of guests if you fancy a little exploration of the area. If you have a dog, they also offer a variety of options to make your pet’s stay as welcome as possible too!

Arrival

The hotel entrance

We arrived on a Friday afternoon having driven from Zurich. However, if you’re planning on flying or coming by train, the hotel is less than half an hour away from Innsbruck so very easy to reach. The town of Seefeld is pedestrianised so when you approach by car you need to turn right past the Euro Spar supermarket and you will arrive directly in front of the hotel where they will take care of your car. There are lots of shops and restaurants nearby and the area is perfect for strolling round.

Despite being arriving a bit stressed from the Friday afternoon traffic, the reception staff offered us a drink and put us completely at our ease as we checked in. Our luggage was taken care of and we went upstairs to view our room.

Bedrooms

We were staying in a beautiful suite which not only had a small living room area but was newly renovated and large and spacious. The room was very special as it was on the ground floor with doors which opened out directly onto the very pretty garden and pool area. A little turret in the corner had been turned into a cute little seated area – a sort of day bed – where you could recline and relax.

The bed was extremely comfortable and there was so much storage available throughout the generously proportioned room. With all mod cons, decent wifi, coffee machine, a mini bar with complimentary soft drinks and a little hiking rucksack you could borrow, the room was beautifully equipped. Each of the rooms at the hotel has its own characteristics and we really loved this one.

Bathroom

The bathroom was large and spacious, tiled floor to ceiling in a chic grey with a wonderful power shower. No bath tub – but it was beautifully modern and decorated with lovely grey tiles which went well with the glass and wood.

Tour of the Cellars

Every Friday evening Alois Seyerling gives a tour of the hotel and cellars for hotel guests. The hotel is full of little nooks and crannies and Alois told us the most amazing stories of his forebears and their exploits. At the end of it all we enjoyed an Apéro with some of their delicious local wine and beer.

Restaurants

You need never go hungry at the hotel as there always seems to be an amazing array of food wherever you go.

On the first night we had the buffet dinner in the main restaurant and boy was this a feast! Not only was the food amazing to look at, but it all tasted divine and there was lots of choice – including a very extensive salad bar. The Austrians do seem to have a reputation for great hospitality. There was a great mix of hearty and healthy options – and all beautifully presented, fresh and delicious.

We sat at the same table the following morning for breakfast and as well as a generous buffet, there is also an inclusive à la carte menu with a good selection of hot egg and bacon options and a juice bar. You help yourself to a variety of fruit and vegetables and place them in a bowl which you hand to the waitress who whizzes it all up to create your very own fruit and vegetable cocktail. Delicious!

On the second night we dined at the Bräukeller & Grill Steak Restaurant. It was lovely to sit outside on the balcony over the pedestrianised street area. The salad starters were fresh and delicious and the steaks were fabulous – some of the best we had had for a long time. Not only did they have a wonderful hot grilled flavour but were deliciously tender and cut like butter.

Hiking

There are lots of activities you can sign up to do and we started our first day with a wonderful Pilates class. It’s not easy running a class with lots of different abilities (and we were definitely in the lower end of the ability level!) but it was a really great class which really set us up for the day.

We felt completely stretched out and full of energy afterwards, which was just as well, as Clemens, another member of the Seyrling family, was going to take us on a hike into the surrounding mountains.

We joined a small group of other hotel guests and Clemens  took us first by minibus to a place he had selected. We had a wonderful hike though the stunning South Tirolean scenery. Even the dog was enjoying the views 🙂

Clemens was great at keeping us motivated and it was lovely to be in a group where we were all helping each other to get to the top.

Once we’d reached the summit we stopped for lunch at a beautiful mountain restaurant and sat outside in the sunshine enjoying some home made Austrian food before heading back to the hotel to relax and enjoy the spa and wellness.

The Spa and Wellness Area

The spa and wellness area is both outdoor and indoor. Outdoors you have the heated pool equipped with jets and jacuzzi seats.

There is also a small interconnected indoor pool area where you relax in one of the recliners and sit and admire the beautiful garden and pool.

Then inside you have an enormous heated pool with lots of steams, saunas and even a beer relaxation room – after all it’s also a brewery!

I really enjoyed swimming in the outdoor pool and then simply chilling on one of the many deckchairs or swings dotted around the garden and admiring the beautiful scenery.

With church steeples and mountain tops and a garden full of colourful  flowers, it was truly relaxing.

The Younique Massage

I had an absolutely blissful massage whilst I was there. Before you begin the massage you have a short consultation with your spa therapist to tell them what type of massage you like – and what you don’t like. Based on this information they then create a personalised massage with is truly unique. Their “Feel.UNIQUE SPA concept” ensures the treatment is based purely on your preferences. All you have to do is book the time slot.

It’s such a simple but very effective idea. After the wonderful massage I really felt so relaxed that I just had to lie down and recover. It was perfect!

In Conclusion

A Fabulous Break at Hotel Klosterbraü & Spa Austria

Our experience at the Hotel Klosterbräu was one of real warmth and friendliness – where Austrian hospitality meets luxury and relaxation. It’s a gem of a hotel in a magnificent location. We were very sad to leave and it was a big wrench to walk away from the loungers in the sunny garden and head back to Zurich. However, at least we felt totally refreshed and rejuvenated and had enjoyed our weekend break immensely. So if you’re in need of some “TLC” why not pop over and see for yourself? You can’t help but be captivated by its charms.
