A 4 Star Hotel with a 5 Star Attitude

Hotel Schweizerhof Zermatt

Situated just a stone’s throw from Zermatt railway station is the newly renovated Hotel Schweizerhof Zermatt. There is no need for a battery operated car to pick you up from the train, as it’s literally across the road, but just in case you prefer that luxury, the hotel’s little red bus is at your disposal.

Belonging to the Michel Reybier group of luxury hotels (which include for example the La Réserve in Geneva ) the hotel has been redesigned throughout by architect and designer team Kristian Gavoille & Valérie Garcia, who have created a warm, welcoming and very open mountain feel, enhanced with lots of little extras.

The entrance on Bahnhofstrasse is located directly in Bahnhofstrasse and once inside you can see how the bright new look has uplifted this 4 star hotel. The beautiful open plan reception area with the colourful illuminated bar, and cosy restaurant are only too welcoming. Wood and local materials abound giving it an Alpine Chic and a slightly hip feel to the hotel. In the evenings the bar is rapidly becoming a “go to” place in Zermatt, with a relaxed vibe and a DJ playing live.

The staff are super friendly and very helpful, and having arrived early after a train journey from Zurich, we had a speedy check-in then settled on lunch before going upstairs to check out our room.

The Rooms

Hotel Schweizerhof Zermatt

The hotel has 95 rooms and suites and was renovated in just 8 months opening in December 2018. For each room the existing shell was completely updated and upgraded with fresh new materials and furnishings to make them practical, chic and modern but also using the latest technology.

We were staying in a double room which had a cute little balcony attached and overlooked Bahnhofstrasse. What’s more we even had a view of the Matterhorn which really made it so special.

The double rooms at around 27 sq metres are medium sized and very thoughtfully laid out. There’s plenty of room for keeping all your ski gear in order as well as generous hanging space and drawers for your clothes and accessories too. What I loved is the tech! There was a large wide screen tv, a tablet, but best of all there were plenty of plugs, and USB ports – perfect for charging camera, batteries, power banks and computers etc. Good wifi throughout the hotel completed the picture. For me, the pièce de résistance was the Dyson hair dryer which literally dried my hair in seconds!

There are three main restaurants and the Schweizerhof Kitchen run by Head Chef, Emmanuel Horclois, is the first one you encounter as you enter the hotel.  With an open “show kitchen” and using top quality local ingredients, with many specialities from the Valais region of Switzerland the menu is modern yet with plenty of traditional twists. We enjoyed fabulous flame grilled steaks which were perfectly cooked along with some refreshing and tasty starters.

Though we didn’t try them, the pizzas made of home-made-dough are prepared in the on site pizza oven by the hotel’s pizza chefs and looked and smelled fabulous! The desserts we can attest were magnificent! 🙂

La Muña

The highlight for me was the amazing dinner at La Muña, the Peruvian and Asian fusion restaurant. Attentively looked after and advised by Indonesian born Maitre D, Juani Naiborhu, we sampled the most wonderful ceviche followed by blackened cod & a delightful salmon dish. I really loved the fresh, light tastes and beautiful combinations and this really was my absolutely favourite meal. It’s also in this restaurant that you have a wonderful, bountiful breakfast with a choice of lots of hot dishes made to order as well as a great buffet.

If you’re wanting an authentic Swiss mountain experience what better than a raclette or fondue at the Cheese Factory?  Traditional Swiss mountain specialities are served up in a convivial and relaxed family atmosphere. An ideal location for a group of friends or family to have dinner together. Whilst you’re at it why not go the whole hog and have a the Swiss specialty dessert of meringue and berries with Gruyère double cream?

The Spa

The Spa and Wellness has a wonderful pool with relaxing chairs and loungers all around. It’s the perfect place to chill after a day on the slopes. There is also a steam and a spa and two hot tubs too, which sadly we didn’t have the opportunity to try. However, I did manage to have a fabulous massage given by Martin which really was extremely good and made me feel fit and prepared for another day on the slopes. There is a full menu of Nescens beauty and skin treatments too for a truly indulgent stay. If you’d rather work out in the gym, there’s one on site too.

Looking after families is an important facet of the Hotel Schweizerhof’s hospitality and the Kids Club is just one way in which they provide facilities for children. Large, spacious and well equipped with friendly staff, the Kids Club has plenty to occupy the children of all ages. The hotel is ideal for families and the staff are all super welcoming to children.

The skiing in Zermatt is fabulous. The slopes are long and well prepared and there is just so much choice. Of course you have fabulous views of the Matterhorn from every angle and you can even ski into Italy too.

Hotel Schweizerhof Zermatt 2 minutes walk from Zermatt train station

One last thing to emphasise about the Hotel Schweizerhof is its perfect location! It’s right in the heart of Bahnhofstrasse so there is plenty going on and you are surrounded by lots of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. It’s also just a couple of minutes from Zermatt train station as I mentioned earlier, and if you’re skiing it’s just two minutes from the train that takes you up the Rothorn and directly onto the ski slopes!

There is plenty to see and do in the whole area whether you ski or not and when the snow disappears there is paragliding, hang-gliding, climbing and lots of hikes to be had.

The hotel is perfect for families as well as couples, groups of friends and sole travellers as there is something for everyone. We had a wonderful time here and really look forward to visiting again.
