Having only opened in December, the Hide Hotel Flims has not been slow to win recognition as a very special hotel destination and has already racked up a bunch of accolades. Not only has it been selected by Vogue Magazine as one of their top 7 picks for Mountain Hotels around the world for 2019, by House and Garden magazine as their hotel of the month for February, by Bloomberg as one of their 12 best ski resorts for the season but also by Condé Nast traveler as one of the world’s 6 best ski hotels. So understandably we were pretty excited as we drove from Zurich to Flims to stay there.

Estate agents always tell you that the most important thing about a house is location, location, location. In the case of the Hide Hotel Flims you just can’t get a better location! It’s situated directly on the slopes and right next to the gondola station which takes you straight up the mountain. At the end of the day you can ski right back home.

It’s also part of the brand new Stenna Flims complex which includes a cinema, a kids’ play area, a supermarket, various shops including a chemist, a public ski room and in the basement there is the garage. All super convenient and everything is modern and new.

Design Hotel

This Hide boutique hotel is part of the Design Hotels group. Featuring a collection of striking, unique and sometimes slightly quirky hotels which all have amazing design, each hotel has its own individual look and style.

Once you enter the hotel you’re struck by the beautiful jewel like colours. The day we arrived in late February the sun was shining brightly and it was a lovely contrast to walk from the snow covered white slopes to the plush, rich colours of the interior decor.

It feels like you’ve set foot in a cosy living room with a lovely fire burning and lots of comfy seating. From this incredible setting you can see out of the windows directly onto the ski slopes. Designed by Baumschlager Eberle, the interiors are by Stylt Trampoli award winning designer, Erik Nissen Johansen.

After a very friendly welcome and speedy check in with Fiona we went upstairs to see our room.

The Rooms

The cool interior design continues in the 47 bedrooms, with bold colours, a touch of urban and lots of different textures and fabrics. I loved the green wall paper which was flecked with gold sparkles and the darker shade of green velvet curtains. It contrasted well with the rather interesting wine coloured carpet and the wood and gold.

It’s all colourful and very functional and I found it surprisingly relaxing. Whilst taking a shower you have a view through the room onto the mountain slopes and the tiling was very cool with pale grey circles on a pink background, and circular basins.

The bed was wonderfully comfortable and the room had plenty of sockets (though I didn’t see any USB ones which would have been nice), a Nespresso machine, a little fridge, a couple of comfy chairs and a lovely terrace where you could chill and watch the sun go down over the mountains after a hard day’s skiing.

Talking of skiing, there is are 235 km of excellent pistes just waiting for you to explore.

If you’re planing on stopping for lunch in one of the mountain restaurants either go super early or later in the day or book your table in in advance, as in high season (we were staying in February) they tend to get booked up. There are plenty of choices from the big tent of La Vacca, with lots of grilled meats, to one of my favourites, Startgels, and lots besides. At the end of the day why not catch up with friends at the Legna Bar at the bottom of the slopes for après-ski drinks – or have a one by the fire in the hotel?

Spa Coming

The Spa and Wellness will be ready in July 2019 – and it sounds as if it will be terrific. I’m sure it will be the ideal place to relax and enjoy a day of skiing.

Restaurants

We had a fabulous dinner at “The Hide Dining” Restaurant which is one of two restaurants belonging to the hotel with the other one being the The Deli.

The Deli

There were plenty of regional specialities on the menu and we chose some regionally inspired starters followed by amazing steaks, which were cooked to perfection.

We accompanied our dinner with “The Butcher” wine from Scheibelhofer, a vineyard I have visited in Austria and whose wine I really admire. We had a fabulous evening and really enjoyed the whole meal.

Breakfast can be taken any time between the hours of 7.30am and 11am in the same restaurant and offers a great selection of both hot and cold dishes as well a lovely array of juices, cereals and breads.

Convenience

The convenience of the location is not to be underestimated. When you’re exhausted after a hard day’s skiing the idea of walking just a few paces from the bottom of the last run into the hotel boot room and onto your room is just delightful. After a shower you can then relax in your room, maybe watch the sun go down from a comfortable chair on your private terrace or go downstairs and sit by the fire with a glass of wine. If there’s anything you’ve forgotten to bring with you the shopping complex can surely help and if it’s a walk into town you fancy, well it’s just on your doorstep.

I’m sure it will be amazing to stay here in the Summer time too when you can experience the hiking, the mountain biking (and of course the new Wellness). For the time being it’s safe to say that I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Hide Hotel Flims and it is a fabulous place for a wonderful and relaxing skiing holiday.
