A Luxurious Staycation at Hotel La Réserve Eden Au Lac Zurich
Staycations have become a new and very popular phenomenon and if you’re looking for somewhere very special to stay in Zurich, where better than the La Réserve Eden Au Lac? Part of the Michel Reybier Hospitality group, this hotel really knows how to spoil you. The grand French Empire-style building occupies an enviable spot in Zurich with magnificent views over Lake Zurich. It has occupied this great location since 1909, but following the completion of its major redesign in conjunction with Philippe Starck, it was reopened with its brand new look in 2020. It is now one of the most stylish hotels in Zurich.
With its lakeside location, it’s only logical that it should have a maritime feel and Philippe Starck and his team have created this a very stylish “yacht club feel”, which you experience throughout the hotel. There is stunning decoration, beautiful art work (like this stained glass painting by Philippe Starcks’s daughter Ara) and amazing attention to detail everywhere you look.
Arrival at La Réserve Eden Au Lac
We arrived at the hotel later than we had hoped after an 11 hour car journey from Florence! The journey should have only taken just 7 hours. Unfortunately, due a lorry catching fire right in front of the Gotthard Tunnel all traffic had been stopped on the motorway before being very slowly re-routed over the Gotthard Pass. The reception staff were marvellous! They calmed us down as they listened to our sorry tale and welcomed us warmly and quickly checked us in. We were then whisked up to our room with stunning lake views.
The Rooms
Each of the 37 rooms and 3 suites continue in the nautical theme you find throughout the hotel and each bedroom door has a photos of a yacht next to it with your room number emblazoned on the sail.
Our room, number 25, was extremely stylish and comfortable.
We had French windows giving onto a lovely balcony complete with table and chairs and views right across the lake.
The room was not huge but beautifully designed with all the Philippe Starck touches. Even the bathroom bin is a work of art! The bed was extremely comfortable and as befits a modern hotel there were plenty of plugs and sockets. We had two little welcome cakes and a little fruit basket awaiting us. A complimentary mini bar and a Nespresso machine completed the scene. Another nice touch is the Dyson hairdryer.
However, we had no time to dawdle as we had a dinner reservation – so after a quick turn around it was time to head upstairs!
Dining at La Réserve Eden Au Lac
There are two restaurants at the hotel, the Eden Kitchen & Bar on the ground floor, which serves Swiss and international cuisine under executive chef Marco Ortolani and the La Muña restaurant on the 6th Floor under Chef Domenico Zizzi. We chose to have dinner at La Muña not only because of the views but for the amazing fusion cuisine! It’s a wonderful mix of Japanese and Peruvian and is so full of colour, flavour and vibrancy. It also feels very light and the texture and tastes are simply amazing.
La Muña Restaurant Hotel Eden Au Lac Zurich
There is an indoor part as well as two outdoor terraces to the La Muña restaurant and we were lucky enough to seated outside on one of the terraces, high above Lake Zurich as if we were on a boat.
After a celebratory glass of Champagne for actually arriving at the hotel, it was time to explore the menu.
Seaweed and Prime sashi beef
“Crispy Shake” Creamy spicy salmon tartare and Chicken and Truffle Gyozas
The dining concept is based around “sharing dishes” and our waiter Marc Schroeder was not only super friendly but also really helpful in enabling us to make a great selection.
Sea bass ceviche
Blackened cod
We finished off with some impressive desserts:
We truly enjoyed the delicious dishes prepared by Chef Domenico Zizzi and had a really memorable dinner.
As the evening progressed (it was the night of the big storm in Zurich!) we moved inside to finish our drinks, as shortly after sunset the wind had begun to get up.
Inside the La Muña restaurant it was warm, relaxing and cosy with an eclectic mix of interesting nautical nautical decorations like boat oars and lamps alongside very comfortable Philippe Starck chairs. A perfect place to relax.
We had enjoyed a perfect dinner after a very stressful day travelling by car and we were ready for a good night’s sleep.
Breakfast at the Eden Kitchen & Bar
In the morning we had a wonderful breakfast at the Eden Kitchen & Bar.
There’s everything you could wish for from platters of fresh fruit to fried eggs and bacon and Eggs Benedict. I love the little touches with the elephant logo on the cappuccino.
What To Do On a Staycation?
So what do you do on a Staycation in Zurich? Well it’s the perfect opportunity to act like a tourist in your own home; to visit museums, go for walks, explore art galleries, visit parks and discover new cafes and eateries. (Of course you could always check out NewInZurich’s Weekly What’s On page to see what is happening in the city and get some inspiration!). Otherwise you could have a drink in the lovely bar, go to the hotel gym (which is open 24/7), watch the world go by from your hotel room or simply chill!
