A Tour of the
Hotel La Reserve Eden au Lac Zurich
It seems that the Eden au Lac has been undergoing refurbishments for ages and how I have missed that beautiful rooftop bar in Summer! The good news is that the Grande Dame is now back in business and the hotel which first opened its doors in 1909, has re-opened them once more. We went for a tour the other day to find out what the “new look” is all about.
Situated right in front of Lake Zurich it really has a perfect location. It is now operating under the Michel Reybier La Réserve brand following the major redesign courtesy of none other than Philippe Starck. As soon as you enter you detect a maritime vibe and a “yacht club feel” to the new design. On first impression it feels, lighter, brighter, airier and more open than before. Everything is a little more “minimal” and even the walls have been stripped back to the brick work.
Eden Kitchen & Bar
We enjoyed drinks along with delicious snacks at the downstairs Eden Kitchen & Bar at a beautiful long table made of one gigantic length of wood. Further along there are tables and chairs set out in the dining room with a bright green ceramic open kitchen. The cuisine here is Swiss and international and the chef, Marco Ortolani, hails from Italy.
However, upstairs, is the star of the show, the beautiful new Peruvian-Japanese restaurant called La Muña. The chef of this new 6th floor restaurant is Tomoko Gunji Hangartner presiding over the red ceramic tiled open kitchen.
We sat down on a comfy sofa for drinks and tried some of the kitchen’s delightful small dishes. There’s an eclectic mix of interesting objects, rugs, and nautical paintings as well as the wooden hanging beams which bestow a certain amount of privacy to the guests and the domed roof adds a touch of interest. Throughout there are stylish (and very comfortable) Starck tables and chairs blending in effortlessly.
Two Roof Terraces
There are now not one, but two rooftop terraces with panoramic views over the lake and you can eat and drink outside – well, once the weather is a bit more clement.
The Hotel Has 40 Rooms and Suites
The hotel has just 40 rooms and suites and there is no worry about forgetting your room number as next to each door you also have a picture of a different yacht – so just remember this and there’s no need to worry about numbers! The rooms are stylish and well designed though not huge, but everything has been thought of right down to the tiniest details. The suites with balconies over the lake must be amazing in Summertime!
In summary, the Hotel La Réserve Eden Au Lac is beautifully decorated throughout and occupies the perfect position for a luxury hotel, right on the lake. For locals and visitors it’s an exciting development with a couple of great new restaurants and bars to add to Zurich’s attractions. Best of all I’m looking forward to the the rooftop terrace once Summer arrives in the city.
