One of the biggest highlights is the location. We visited in Summer and the scenery was idyllic. The hotel is just a few minutes’ walk from the Savognin cable car, making it incredibly easy to head straight into the mountains each morning.

During the summer months, guests staying one night or more receive the Val Surses Guest Card, which includes free or discounted mountain transport, free local public transport and numerous discounts on attractions and activities throughout the region.

Lake Barnagn

Just a short walk from AVES Homebase lies the beautiful Lai Barnagn, a crystal-clear mountain swimming lake that’s perfect for cooling off after a hike. With its grassy sunbathing areas, beach volleyball court, mini golf, SUP hire, pedalos and lakeside kiosk, it’s ideal for both couples and families.

The water is wonderfully refreshing on warm summer days, and the whole area has a relaxed alpine holiday feel.

A Wonderful Base in Winter Too

Although I visited during summer, it’s easy to see why AVES is equally popular in winter. The mountain railway is only a short walk from the hotel, meaning you can be on the slopes within minutes. Heated ski boot racks, ski storage and easy access to the ski area make everything wonderfully convenient.

Ideal for Families

Families are particularly well catered for. The hotel offers family rooms, indoor and outdoor play areas, while Savognin itself is one of Graubünden’s most family-friendly destinations with themed hiking trails, swimming lake, children’s activities and excellent skiing during winter.

One of the things I loved most about staying at AVES Homebase is that there’s so much to experience just a few minutes away. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing day by the water, an adrenaline-filled mountain adventure or fascinating architecture, the Val Surses region has something for everyone.

Race Down the Mountain on a Mountaincart: Savognin Mountaincar

If you’re looking for something a little more exciting, don’t miss the Mountaincarts. After taking the gondola up to Somtgant, you can race nearly 10 kilometres back down towards Savognin on specially designed three-wheeled carts.

Unlike many mountain carts I’ve tried elsewhere, these are incredibly modern, comfortable and confidence-inspiring. The seating position can be adjusted easily, the hydraulic brakes are excellent, and they feel remarkably stable on the mountain track. Even if you’ve never ridden one before, you’ll quickly gain confidence – and before long you’ll be grinning all the way down the mountain. It’s one of the most fun activities in the region and suitable for families as well as adventurous adults.

Visit the Remarkable White Tower: Tor Alva

Just a short drive from Savognin is one of Switzerland’s newest architectural landmarks: Tor Alva (The White Tower) in the tiny village of Mulegns.

Standing almost 30 metres high, this extraordinary structure is officially recognised as the world’s tallest 3D-printed building. Created by the Origen Cultural Foundation together with researchers from ETH Zurich, the tower pushes the boundaries of digital architecture and engineering. Apparently you can even climb its elegant spiral staircase to enjoy spectacular views over the surrounding mountains and there are occasional guided tours which explain the innovative technology behind this remarkable project.

Marvel at the UNESCO Landwasser Viaduct

Around 30 minutes from Savognin you’ll find one of Switzerland’s most iconic railway landmarks: the Landwasser Viaduct, part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Rhaetian Railway.

Stretching gracefully across a deep gorge before disappearing directly into a tunnel carved into the mountainside, this spectacular limestone viaduct has become one of the most photographed railway bridges in the world. Whether you watch the famous bright-red RhB trains crossing the bridge from one of the viewing platforms or take a journey across it yourself on the scenic Albula railway, it’s an unforgettable excursion and a must for photographers, railway enthusiasts and anyone who loves spectacular Alpine scenery.
