Gourmethotel Tenne Lodges
Ratchings / Racines South Tyrol
The word “gourmet” in the title of the hotel’s name is a bit of a giveaway at the Gourmethotel Tenne Lodges and is just one of many reasons to visit this beautiful and luxurious five star hotel in South Tyrol. South Tyrol, despite its Austrian sounding name, is well and truly Italian. However, since the region was a part of Austria until 1918, it is a melting pot of the best of both cultures, cuisines and lifestyles.
Set amongst a backdrop of pine trees literally dripping with snow when we arrived in early February, the modern, very cool alpine architecture of the hotel really strikes you. It occupies the perfect location for skiers as it is literally across the road from the Ratchings-Jaufen ski lifts and slopes. You feel as if you could jump out of the window and start skiing – it’s that close! In fact from the hotel boot room to the lift station literally takes about 4 minutes walk.
Lobby and Check In
Arriving by car there is a drop off area right next to reception where you can off load your cases and the car can then be parked in the large underground car park, which is equipped with plenty of charging points.
We arrived early evening and the lobby area was filled with cosy, comfortable chairs with a wood fire burning. After a friendly and very welcoming check in we went to see our room.
The open plan design incorporates a lot of wood, glass and natural stone which makes for a comfortable yet modern feel.
The rooms or “lodges” are very spacious and open plan and feature lots of wood and other natural materials. We had a small kitchenette with small hob and fridge and a dining table area as you came into the room, and it was all very tastefully laid out.
A comfortable bed in the centre with views out to the slopes, a sofa, writing desk, a flat screen tv (which we never used as there was so much else to do here), lots of plugs sockets, and great wifi completed the “lodge”. It was super comfy and cosy in a beautiful Alpine way. The large balcony was equipped with a table and chairs and had views directly onto the ski slopes.
The Spa and Wellness
The spa area has a beautiful infinity pool with views directly over the mountains and ski slopes.
There is a huge relaxation area where you can relax and chill and upstairs there is a further relaxation area with a steam bath, herbal sauna and even an infa-red sauna.
Outside there is a jacuzzi and it was fabulous sitting in the hot bubbling water looking out over the snowy landscape. In a separate location outside there is also a Finnish sauna.
What better way to unwind after a day’s skiing or walking than to enjoy a relaxing massage? There are a number of treatment rooms and a menu of treatments offering a good range of massages and facials. I enjoyed a fabulous massage and it was just the right level of pressure. It’s the perfect antidote to a couple of hard day’s skiing and a very popular activity here! There is also a hairdresser on site if you need one too.
Hats off to Chef Mike Bräutigam who created the most amazing master pieces of tempting and delicious dishes. Sometimes it was hard to contemplate ruining the “art on the plate” – but I can attest that it was well worth it. 🙂 The food not only looked sensational but tasted wonderful too.
Dinner was particularly fabulous as there was a choice of so many dishes to choose from – and depending on your level of hunger you could choose to be conservative or indulgent in choosing which ones to go for. However, there wasn’t a single dish that I tried which I could fault – they were all truly amazing.
Breakfast was also great with a large choice of both hot and cold dishes. I particularly liked the juicing machine which you could use to create your own personalised juice from a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables. The service was friendly and very professional and all the staff we met spoke amazing English.

In Winter it’s the perfect location for skiing, and in Spring, Summer and Autumn there are so many options for hiking, walking and simply enjoying the amazing landscape. Local towns such as Sterzing / Vipiteno and Bolzano provide shopping and cultural opportunities. Most of all, true to its name as a a “gourmet hotel”, whatever season you come there is the most fresh, seasonal and beautifully prepared cuisine on offer. On so many fronts, it ticks all the boxes for the perfect holiday destination.
