Huus Quell: A New Luxury Wellness Gem in Appenzell

If you’re looking for a peaceful and luxurious wellness escape just 90 minutes from Zurich, Huus Quell in Appenzell is a luxury alpine retreat that blends contemporary comfort with traditional regional charm. The hotel is the newest addition to the Appenzeller Huus collection, a group of properties owned by Jan Schoch, and it brings a sense of design and wellbeing to this beautiful region.

Huus Quell offers 30 beautifully furnished rooms and suites, all decorated with exquisite Jakob Schlaepfer textiles from St. Gallen. The city was known internationally for its fashionable fabrics and innovative artistry. Soft tones, natural textures and warm lighting create a calming atmosphere and our room was well designed with a spacious feel.

A 2,200 m² Wellness World With a Rooftop Spa

The spa at Huus Quell is great. It spans more than 2,200 square metres and is designed to nurture body, mind and spirit. It’s the perfect place to relax after a hard week and there are plenty of options to choose from.

At the top of the building, there is the indoor rooftop spa with a lap pool, a warm relaxation/jet pool with relaxation zones and sweeping views over the Appenzell countryside. It’s a perfect spot to start or end the day in total tranquillity.

On the main spa level, you will find a variety of spa experiences: both textile and text-free sauna areas, steam rooms, relaxation rooms and warm hydrotherapy spaces. Outside, an open-air spa zone offers fresh mountain air and soothing heat – it’s really relaxing and perfect for any season. Incidentally, whilst we were there it actually snowed – and it was surreal relaxing in a warm tub with snow falling all around.

Biohacking and Longevity Treatments
Huus Quell also offers a menu of biohacking and longevity treatments, modern recovery therapies and high-performance beauty, including Swissline facials.

The spa is led by the highly respected Hans-Peter Veit, a deeply experienced and exceptionally knowledgeable spa director with decades of expertise. I actually first met Hans-Peter many years ago when he was Spa Director at the Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel and it really was lovely to reconnect with him at Huus Quell.
Trying the Cryotherapy Chamber – A Fascinating Biohacking Experience
During my stay, I tried one of the spa’s signature biohacking therapies: the cryotherapy chamber. Firs too all you need to changeinto your bathing suit, and then layer up with a hat, gloves, socks, rubber sandals and a protective face mask.
You first spend 30 seconds in the acclimatisation chamber before entering the main cryotherapy chamber for a full 3 minutes. It’s certainly intense and the 3 minutes feel surprisingly long at the time, but afterwards there’s an incredible rush of energy and quite a sense of euphoria. It’s a fascinating and invigorating experience that is supposed to offer numbers health benefits.
Dining at the Löwenstube

For dinner, we ate at the wonderfully traditional Löwenstube, located in one of the sister properties within the Appenzeller Huus collection. With its warm atmosphere, delicious local dishes and charming service, it’s a perfect place to enjoy the flavours of the region after a day of wellness and fresh air.
Breakfast at Huus Quell
Breakfast at Huus Quell is another highlight. Served on delightful étagères, it includes a selection of small, beautifully presented bites, allowing you to sample a variety of flavours without feeling too full. You can also order additional hot and cold dishes from the menu, so it’s a perfect start to the day.
