Relax and Chill at the Hotel Vitznauerhof
on Lake Lucerne
With the famous Mount Rigi to its rear, and the stunning lake Lucerne in front of it, the Hotel Vitznauerhof certainly occupies a wonderful position. We arrived on the first day of the season at the end of May and were greeted with beautiful sunshine and brilliant blue skies. There were a few fluffy clouds around but they only served to make the sky look bluer.
It’s normally a journey of just around an hour from Zurich, but due to the Corona traffic queues (everyone taking their car in Zurich instead of public transport) and the Bank Holiday traffic it took slightly longer – but it’s a super scenic journey so very enjoyable.
Walking up the steps from the car park to the entrance you step across the original, beautifully restored terrazzo flooring. The reception is straight ahead and with lovely high ceilings, a tall fireplace and a most flamboyant painted ceiling.
The building itself is an imposing art deco turreted hotel built in 1901, but inside the vibe is friendly, chilled and relaxed. The welcoming staff greeted us with warm smiles and gave us a refreshing kombucha and strawberry drink which we drank in the modern bar (photos below) adjacent to the reception.
The Room
After a swift check in we took the lift to Room 407, the Vitznauerhof Suite on the fourth floor. Designed across two floors with a little staircase to link the lounge area to the bedroom, it was spacious, clean and bright and had the most stunning lake views ever.
Not only that but we had not just one, but two little balcony areas, where we could either sit down on chairs or recline in loungers. Total luxury! You feel like a drone surveying the scene as you take in the beauty of the setting. Every time you look the view is that tiny bit different – it’s just totally mesmerising.
In addition we had two bathrooms, one with just a toilet and basin on the lower floor and on the upper floor both a bath, a shower and a toilet and twin basins. The bedroom area was very spacious and there was plenty of room to lounge around and relax. There was a mini bar stocked with bottles of cold water and the room had everything you needed for a relaxing stay.
The ever changing views are simply stupendous and really put you in holiday mood.
The Gardens and the Lake
There is something about nature which totally uplifts the soul, and the Hotel Vitznauerhof really possesses this reviving character. The gardens here are simply stunning.
Located as they are directly on the waters edge, they are green and lush with plenty of trees and dotted all around are comfy loungers where you can lie down and relax as you take in the views.
There are SUPs you can take on the lake, you can walk, swim, jump into the large jacuzzi or just lounge and take in the views. You can even hire a boat. In case you get thirsty the bar is located in the garden right next to the Panorama Terrace Restaurant.
Gastronomy
Breakfast is arranged prettily on étagères and you have a good choice of both savoury and sweet dishes as the waitress comes round with a trolley full of goodies, regular top ups of hot drinks (or how about a Blood Mary to get your day off to kickstart? ) all set out in individual little pots. It is served in the restaurant just off the reception where you look out directly onto the gardens and lake.
In the evening we had dinner at the Panorama Terrace Restaurant located directly on the lake and watched in awe as the sun set right in front of us.
For starters we had pork belly and sweet and cauliflower with black garlic cream (see photo below) and the Vitznauerhof Salad followed by Unpulled Pork with a honey and mustard sauce and Sea Bream, followed by Chocolate Mousse and coffee. It was all delicious and beautifully presented.
The wonderful food was matched by the spectacular sunset.
Sens Michelin Star Restaurant
The Michelin star restaurant, Sens, is a little further down the hotel gardens and occupies another fabulous position right on the lake and it also has a little jetty with a couple of tables too. I can’t wait to try this one next time!
The Spa
The newly renovated spa area offers a fabulous array of treatments and therapies from facials to massages and lots more. There is also a sauna, a steam and plenty of space to relax and chill. Outside in the gardens there is a jacuzzi – again looking directly towards the lake.
In Conclusion
This really is a wonderful hotel. The staff here are truly amazing – so friendly and genuine. The ambiance is so relaxing, you instantly feel at home – and with views like this, you certainly don’t want to leave!
