There are so many great places you can find within a couple of hours of Zurich and the other week we discovered another wonderful one to add to our list – Hotel Guarda Val near Lenzerheide. Located in the tiny hamlet of Sporz, just outside Lenzerheide, the beautiful Maiensässhotel Guarda Val occupies a wonderful position.
It enjoys fabulous views of the surrounding snow capped mountains. At 1,600 meters above sea level, it combines luxury, relaxation, gourmet food and personal service.
We were staying in late March and the hotel was fully booked and no wonder why – this place really is a bit of a “Geheimtipp” or insider tip! The hotel describes itself as a “Maiensässen” hotel, which refers to the all the traditional farmer’s dwellings, which form the hotel. In fact the Guarda Val consists of a total of 11 traditional Maiensässen, and some of them are more than 300 years old.
Each rooms is totally unique and each of the buildings which make up the Maiensässhotel Guarda Val are just so different. We were in room 37 in the Tgiesa Martins building and our little suite had a cozy little lounge as well as cute little bedroom with an ensuite showroom with wc and basin off to the side.
Throughout there was lots of traditional wood. Good old fashioned wood with plenty of bumps and knots and cracks. It all contributed to this laid back, natural, cosy but somehow very soothing vibe. The suite had everything you needed including tea and coffee making facilities, armchairs and a sofa and was just a gorgeous place to chill. However, some suites even have free standing bath tubs in the centre of the room – so each one is very different.
The food is a definite highlight at the Guarda Val. After a lavish buffet breakfast you are really set up for the day and they even suggest you make yourself a packed lunch if you’re off skiing or exploring the area. Then in the evening there are 2 restaurants to choose from – the Crap Naros Restaurant and the 16 Gault Millau Gourmet Restaurant Guarda Val, with chef Martin Bieri. On the first night we dined at the Crap Naros and enjoyed a wonderful fondue on the outdoor terrace, with a tasty salad starter. We had sheepskins and blankets in addition to the outdoor heaters to keep us warm – and it was a fun experience! After the fondue we really didn’t need anything more to eat, however our host, hotel director, Ralph Treuthardt, encouraged us to try the meringue speciality.
We agreed to share a portion – but the when it arrived, topped with a mountain of cream it really looked enough for 4 people! Somehow, however, we managed to devour it and it was absolutely divine!
Guarda Val Gourmet Restaurant
On the second night we ate at the Guarda Val Gourmet Restaurant. Chef Martin Bieri is keen to use fresh regional produce from the area and the dishes we enjoyed were full of flavour and each one was a piece of art on a plate. We went for the 4 course Surprise Menu and it was absolutely wonderful. It consisted of small, visually appealing dishes which were so full of flavour and all beautifully presented.
We had a number of delicious Amuse Bouches and a delicious savoury pancake, followed by Brüggli salmon trout, Madura beef fillet and then a dessert which combined banana, ice cream and lots of flavours.
Then just as we thought we had finished they brought over the most delicious chocolates which were superb! The breads which accompanied the dinner were so tasty they also deserve a mention, as does the wonderful roasted rapeed oil which tasted fabulous – and is something I will just have to buy as it is delicious.
Another great thing about the hotel is that every afternoon from 3pm till 5pm they have a wonderful selection of “Kaffee Und Kuchen”.
Whether you’ve been racing down the slopes, or taking it easy relaxing in the wellness area, you can help yourself to these homemade delicacies at the “Cake Buffet” located in the cellar and enjoy them sitting in a deck chair or on the terrace overlooking the mountains.
The “Hot Pot”
Wellness and relaxation are taken very seriously at the Guarda Val always and there is plenty to do. As well as a small gym, there are saunas and my personal highlight, the hot tubs. They actually call them “hot pots” but since this reminds me of the name of a Lancashire stew, I prefer to use the word “tub” rather than pot! With a temperature of around 40 degrees celsius the water in these wood fuelled hot tubs is seriously hot! However, there is a cooling fountain which you can jump into right next to it, or if you really need cooling down you can add buckets of cold water.
From the hot tubs you can enjoy peaceful and relaxing views. The nearby rustic log cabin houses a sauna complete with open fire and there is a separate mini sauna (see below) situated inside a small gondola!
Afterwards you could chill in the relaxation room or maybe simply sit outside in one of the deckchairs.
Snowshoeing and Hiking
There are some great snowshoeing and hiking trails just minutes from the hotel door,. We went for an easy one which gave us beautiful views of the snowy mountain tops and was a good way to try and burn off some of those surplus calories!
If you want to go skiing or snowboarding you can take the hotel shuttle to the Val Sporz lifts in just a few minutes. The Lenzerheide slopes are linked to resort of Arosa by cable car offering you around 225 kilometres of slopes to explore.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Maiensässhotel Guarda Val. It was very relaxing, with amazing food and very friendly and helpful service. It’s the perfect place to relax and unwind whilst enjoying top class cuisine in a beautiful environment in the mountains. Highly recommended!
