The Dolder Grand Zurich – A perfect Place To Celebrate !
Perched high above Zurich on Adlisberg Hill, the Dolder Grand has been welcoming guests since 1899. It was originally a “Kurhaus” or Spa and the historic main building was preserved when it underwent a major renovation in from 2004 – 2008 by top London architects Foster and Partners and was expanded with two new wings.
This luxury 5 star resort enjoys fabulous views of the lake, the city below and the alps. It is surrounded by nature and there are plenty of beautiful walks you can take in the nearby woodland.
Perfect Place for a Celebration
From a distance it looks like a fairy castle and it is indeed the perfect place to escape for vacation, for relaxation or for pleasure. We went there to celebrate a milestone wedding anniversary and it was a perfect place to “go away” without actually leaving Zurich.
175 Rooms and Suites and Choice of Restaurants
With 175 Rooms and Suites it offers a choice of exquisite cuisine, including the 2 Michelin Star The Restaurant (19 GaultMillau points and 2 Michelin stars) with Heiko Nieder (Swiss Chef of the Year 2019), the Restaurant Saltz and when we were there, the Pop Up “Oriental Hideaway” with Chef Firas EI-Borji.
We were staying in a Junior Suite on the fourth floor of the main building which had two balcony windows with great views across to the lake and to the golf course below.
A well stocked bathroom with bath, shower and toiletries by Dr Pauline Burgener completed the scene. We were delighted to receive a celebratory selection of chocolates, macarons and petit fours prepared by celebrated Pastry Chef Christian Hümbs, and to toast our special day with champagne – what could be a better way to celebrate?
Since it was a balmy Summer’s evening we dined out on the patio at Saltz and enjoyed a delicious dinner with an amazing view of Zurich.
To start we had steak tartare and stuffed courgette flowers with asparagus. I followed this with one of my favourites, blackened cod, whilst my husband had the truffled guinea fowl. Special mention goes to the cod which was so beautifully cooked and the steak tartare which was one of the best I have tasted.
We really didn’t need desserts, but chocolate cake with a molten middle and ice cream and the crème brulée with apricots were just too tempting and the perfect end to a wonderful evening.
Spa and Wellness
The following day the 4,000 square metres spa and wellness area beckoned. We were thinking of going for a ride in the nearby woods on one of the hotel’s complimentary e-bikes or mountain bikes, but the spa won us over.
With a lovely indoor swimming pool and jacuzzi, an outdoor jacuzzi overlooking the lake and plenty of loungers on the terrace outside it was just so inviting.
There is a steam, a sauna, a “snowparadise”, a women’s only area and several relaxation areas. There are just so many places to relax and unwind.
The Dolder Grand Art Collection
For those of you who enjoy art, make sure to visit the hotel’s famous art collection. There are more than 100 artworks from legends such as Andy Warhol, Henry Moore and Salvador Dalí. You can even borrow one of the hotel’s iPads to take a self-guided art tour.
Many Ways To Treat Yourself at the Dolder Grand
So if you’re looking for a treat, a celebration or total relaxation and pampering why not consider spending a night or a weekend away at the Dolder Grand? Alternatively, an evening out at one of their wonderful restaurants, the Restaurant, Salz or the Pop Up makes for a fabulous experience. For those of you who are spa bunnies, you might also like to consider a massage or facial and a day pass the Spa. You can find out about the Dr Pauline Burgener luxury facials here.
The Dolder Grand is indeed a fine example of a luxury resort offering a wondeful combination of nature, city, activity and relaxation. The nearby Dolder Sports facilities have a large outdoor pool and a minigolf course (and over Summer there is an outdoor cinema), and close to the hotel is the golf course and tennis court.
