The Riad Fes – A Beautiful Boutique Hotel
Fes is one of the most cultural cities of Morocco and one of the specialities of the culture is the cuisine. When I was invited to take part in the cookery course (article to follow shortly) I was delighted, and even more excited when I discovered the location was the Riad Fes in the city of the same name.
On the plane over I sat next to an American lady who had unfortunately missed half her holiday in Morocco due to discovering as she was leaving the US, that her passport was valid for less than 6 months! Devastated to have lost 5 days of her precious trip she sought solace in the fact she would be staying at the Riad Fes when she arrived, one of the best hotels in the country, she assured me. In fact Forbes Traveller, no less, have described it as “one of Morocco’s sexiest hotels” – I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed.
So what’s so special about the the Riad Fes? Well number one it’s an amazing place – located right in the centre of Fes it’s an oasis of calm and beauty in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the world’s biggest medina. It has just 26 rooms consisting of 7 Standard Rooms with with doubles or twins, 8 Deluxe Rooms, which overlook the bar and pool, 7 Junior Suites, with views of the courtyard or interior garden, 3 Ambassador Suites, overlooking the medina and pool, and the Royal Suite with a king size bed and private terrace. It’s equipped with all mod cons including air conditioning and wifi. Best of all it’s decorated in a most unique way, with a wonderful blend of modern and traditional, and old and new.
You enter via a small almost secret pathway through a garden and a number of gates and once inside you’re taken aback by the beauty and zen like calm of the place. We were warmly welcomed at reception and made to feel totally at home as we relaxed in the stunning surroundings of this beautiful boutique hotel.
The owner, an architect by profession told us about its history, explaining how he originally purchased one house and lovingly restored and renovated the building gradually purchasing the neighbouring houses until it became the boutique hotel that it now is. It’s exquisitely decorated with beautiful taste with lots of original architecture like this beautiful tiled fountain and is a member of the Great Small Hotels and the Relais & Chateaux.
Each of the bedrooms are individually furnished offering luxurious and modern facilities with a Moroccan twist.

Many of the rooms had their own patio area with views over Fes and at the top of the hotel was the restaurant (where if you do the cookery course you get to eat the food that you have prepared) overlooking the splendour of the city. The superb views and the sunshine literally make you feel on top of the world.
The spa offers a variety of treatments but the highlight is the turquoise spa pool surrounded by loungers and enclosed by a verdant wall of lush green plants at the back. It was small but luxurious and just the refreshing escape you dream of after the midday heat in Fes.
