Alberto Giacometti is arguably Switzerland’s most important artist. Modern art lovers would likely recognize his trademark thin bronze figure sculptures. Ex-pats might recognize him as that tired-looking guy on the 100 chf note. Either way, the new exhibit at Kunsthaus Zurich sheds light on his work, his methods and his life and is well worth a visit.

The Kunsthaus already houses the largest and most important collection of the Swiss artist who was born in Stampa, a small town in the Graubunden, in 1901. Comprised of sculptures, paintings and drawings, the permanent collection spans his career and features a range of artistic styles, from representational paintings to Cubist sketches and primitivist sculptures.

The new exhibit, part of a gift from the Bruno and Odette Giacometti Foundation, is comprised of work from throughout the artist’s life and, most intriguingly, includes 75 rarely seen plasters. These plasters have been examined by restorers and prepared for the exhibit as part of a multi-year research project. They add depth to the permanent collection and give insight into the artist’s working methods.
