Free Ballet – ballett für alle Sechseläutenplatz Zurich
I’m sure you’ve heard about or participated in the free openair “Opern für alle” concerts (photo above) which have taken place on Sechseläutenplatz in Zurich for the past five years ? Well now it’s time to try something different- ballet für alle!
What is it and where Does It Take Place?
It is the live transmission of the Romeo und Julia ballet from the Zurich Opera House which is shown on a huge screen. It takes place in the open air on on Sechseläutenplatz in Zurich and best of all it is free! It’s a unique opportunity to experience ballet first hand with friends family and quite possibly around 14,000 strangers! Ballett Zürich as well as the Junior Ballett will dance to music by Sergei Prokofiev’s and the Philharmonia Zürich will be directed by Michail Jurowski.
Tickets and Seating
There are no tickets, no seats – you simply rock up to Sechseläutenplatz and find a pitch and sit down. Obviously the earlier you get there the better, as last year, around 14,000 people turned up and by mid afternoon it was already getting full. Bring along your own folding chairs and picnic blankets. There will also be the opportunity to buy camping chairs on site for CHF 15. On Saturday only, you can purchase the limited-edition “ballett für alle” chairs too.
When: Friday 21st & Saturday 22nd June 2019
On Friday 21st the Opera Werther is screened and on Saturday 22nd June the ballet Romeo und Julia is taking place. On Friday there is the warm-up performance (which isn’t live like the Saturday performance) of the opera Werther by Jules Massenet, starring Juan Diego Flórez and Anna Stéphanie. They will also be featuring backstage films from the Opera House.
On Saturday there will also be a warm up at 6pm with a pre-program by Kurt Aeschbacher before the performance of Romeo und Julia begins at 7.30pm.
Please note that both Friday and Saturday’s performance of ballett für alle will take place no matter whether it is rainy or sunny – so do pack some rain wear just in case!
Food and Drink
Take along your picnic baskets and refreshments or buy food and drink from the vendors on site.
