Interview with Cofounding Expert Jana Nevrlka
Meet cofounding expert Jana Nevrlka, who will conduct a workshop on 24th November 2017 during the next Powerhouse Zurich event at The Hub. Jana has an impressive professional dossier that includes working for 15 years in corporate and international tax law and business strategy consulting for Clifford Chance, Deloitte and EY.
She started her own business in the wellness space in 2014, and then sold it with more than 150% ROI.
She has also, literally, “written the book” on cofounding. Entitled Cofounding the Right Way, it covers all aspects of the topic, including selecting the right cofounders, team organization and governance, equity splits and cofounders agreements. Click here for the event details.
Recently, Jen Lisle from NewInZurich sat down with her and found out some more personal fun facts:
- What motivates you in your work as a consultant?
No more failed business partnerships! The mission started as a very personal one – having (watched) my family (my father and his brother) going through a very disruptive and damaging business partnership split, which for a long time made me very cautious in cooperation with others. On top of that – entrepreneurs have always been my heroes. So I realised I can help them to create and maintain business partnership that succeed, and it does keep me going even through the very tough days.
- Do you have a personal motto that you live by?
I am not great with definite and exclusive choices 🙂 so I have two
“Never hesitate to trade your cow for a handful of magic beans.” (Tom Robbins)
“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
- What is your favorite Zurich restaurant?
My garden BBQ! And variation on the theme of above – Quai 61.
- Do you have any hobbies?
Mountains, mountains and mountains – which is one of the main reasons I am in Switzerland. Book junkie. And love entrepreneurship, traveling, mountains, good wine, guitar around a campfire and serendipitous way of life.
- Do you watch Shark Tank? Do you have a favorite TV show?
Bummer. Do not even have TV. Occasionally and in irregular bites I go for “Suits” and “Grey’s Anatomy” (I am a lawyer by background and my sister is a neurosurgeon – so this way I get some jokes from both our worlds.)
- In what way are you distinctly Czech?
Good question! Hmm… humour? There is nothing that cannot be made fun of…And love for Pilsner Urquell 🙂
- Can you describe a defining or pivotal moment in your life?
MBA leadership class in South Africa… when the homework for the night after an intense day was to write our own obituary. The hook was not to write it as what others would say about you, but what you would like to say about your own life when it is over. And then to see if you are living a life that leads there. So back in that time – working in international business restructuring and tax optimisation – that was a very challenging moment of truth…from which one step at a time…I started to align my life with who I am and my values…and nothing stayed the same 🙂
