Kunst 16, Zurich’s annual contemporary art fair, which runs from Friday Oct. 28 to Sunday Oct 30 at the ABB Hall 550, may be small by international standards, but it packs a mighty punch.

Amongst the 80+ exhibitor galleries, the variety of media ranges widely, from painting to photography to mixed media and video, as does the range of artistic styles, from surreal to abstract to conceptual. Stand at one exhibit and admire a gleaming green series of Coke bottles, then turn to see a moody Dali-esque landscape at the next exhibit and a life-sized sculpture of a selfie-taking girl at another.

A section that’s new this year, called “Statement Schweizer Kunst” showcases work exclusively by Swiss artists, much of which is held by private collectors and rarely seen. Much of the work in this section is by boundary-pushing young artists who use Switzerland or Swiss culture in their work in some way.

The whimsical nature of the work throughout the show, and the fact that much of it is for sale, will appeal to a wide range of visitors, from serious collectors to curators to the simply curious.

But don’t be fooled by the seemingly childlike bright bursts of plastic and color. These artists mean business and take on challenging themes like the nature of identity, politics, religion, our relationship with the environment, among many others.
