Updates: For latest updates see bottom of the article.

Ice skating or walking on a frozen lake is a magical experience and the last time that was possible in Zurich was way back in the Winter of 1962 / 1963. However, from time to time other Swiss lakes do freeze over and you can enjoy this very special experience. The Greifensee last froze over in 2012 and for a short time you could walk and skate over that lake too.

It is 19 years since Lake Oeschinensee near Kandersteg froze over and since the 22nd December you’ve been able to ice skate all over it – an area of about 1.5 km2. The thickness of this ice is just over the 20cm mark. It’s hard to believe this is possible, as in Summer the lake reaches temperatures of 20 degrees and you can see people swimming here.

Whilst the ice lasts you can rent skates directly on the lake from 9.30am to 4pm  – so why not take a look for yourself and enjoy walking or skating on this natural phenomenon. The magic will only last as long as the ice doesn’t melt or the snow doesn’t fall – so this is definitely a “one in 19 years” opportunity!

To reach the lake you need to take the gondola from Kandersteg up to the lake. For more information and for regular status updates on the condition of the ice please visit the Oeschinensee website or contact:

Update 3rd January 2016

Since we wrote the article there has been a dump of around 20 cm of snow on the ice so ice skating is not possible on the lake at the moment – however, you can still walk on the ice as the temperatures are still around freezing.
