Looking for a unique firework event in Switzerland? The Sonnwendfeier Oensingen is one of the most spectacular spring celebrations near Zurich.
What is the Sonnwendfeier Oensingen
Roughly every three years, a very big firework festival takes place in the town of Oensingen in Switzerland. It’s called the Sonnwendfeier Oensingen as it is in fact a Solstice Firework Celebration and it is one of the largest firework displays in the whole of Switzerland.
The tradition of a firework festival dates back to 1912 and the fireworks last for one hour. People come from near and far to view these fireworks and enjoy the party atmosphere with lots of food and drink and the most amazing patterns in the sky.
Pagan and Christian Origins
The idea behind the spectacle, however, is thought to originate from the pagan custom of Spring fires, which in turn were adopted by the Christians. The original Spring fires were thought to have been established to drive out the Winter and to welcome the sun. Around the 8th or 9th Century it was the Christians who took over this event as they lit the bonfires as part of their Easter celebrations.
Getting There
If you would like to go along this year, it is recommended to go via public transport if you can (the station is only 5 minutes away from the event), and the SBB event have a special “RailAway” ticket for the event. Things start getting warmed up from 6pm onwards and it does get busy – so a prompt arrival is a good idea.
