Switzerland Has Most Michelin Star Restaurants in Europe

The 2018 edition of the Michelin Guide contains 118 Swiss restaurants which have at least one Michelin star and three of them are in Canton Zurich. This year’s guide also includes 14 Swiss restaurants which have received a Michelin star for the first time this year.

The Japanese Restaurant in Andermatt, Uri

Locanda Barbarossa in Ascona, Ticino

Cafe Berra in Monthey-Choëx, Valais

Regina Montium in Rigi Kaltbad, Lucerne

Table de Mary in Yverdon-les-Bains/Cheseaux, Vaud

This means that with a total of 118 Michelin-starred restaurants, Switzerland boasts more Michelin starred restaurant per inhabitant than anywhere else in the world and 40 percent more than ten years ago.

The total of Swiss one Michelin star restaurants is now 96 and in addition there are 19 Swiss 2 Michelin Star restaurants (the Einstein Gourmet in St Gallen and Taverne zum Schäfli in Wigoltingen, Thurgau, have been upgraded from one to two stars in the latest edition). Furthermore there are 3 Swiss restaurants with 3 Michelin stars, The Hôtel de Ville in Crissier, the Cheval Blanc in Basel and the Schloss Schauenstein in Fürstenau.

In addition Franck Giovannini of the Hotel de Ville was recently name gault Millau Chef of the year, alongside Virginie Bassot of Restaurant Loti at La Réserve in Geneva.

Michael Ellis, international director of the Michelin guides said that “The level of Swiss cooking is still particularly high: Switzerland remains the country with the largest number of starred restaurants per inhabitant”.

The 2018 guide also awards 30 additional restaurants the Bib Gourmand – granted to places serving a quality three-course menu for less than 70 francs. That brings the total number to 153, twice the number ten years ago.
