World's Steepest Funicular Opens in Stoos

If you’re heading to Stoos anytime soon there is a new attraction to try out and to admire. The world’s steepest funicular railway has just opening in this small Alpine town in the Canton of Schwyz in Switzerland. It was opened by the President of the Swiss federal council, Doris Leuthard, and cost approximately €44.6m to come to fruition. The “Standseilbahn Schwyz-Stoos” as it is known locally, is a feat of Swiss engineering and technology.

The barrel shaped carriages, race up up the mountain at a speed of up to 10 metres a second but despite the velocity and the steep incline,  passengers are able to stand upright at all times.

This scenic mountain town is attracting media attention from all over the globe, as it is now home to the world’s steepest funicular with the 1,720-metre track with a gradient of up to 110% .
