World’s Steepest Funicular In Stoos
World’s Steepest Funicular Railway
If you’re heading to Stoos anytime soon there is one attraction you really should try out. The world’s steepest funicular railway is the major draw in this small Alpine town in Canton Schwyz in Switzerland. It was opened back in 2017 by the then President of the Swiss federal council, Doris Leuthard, and the whole project cost approximately €44.6m. The “Standseilbahn Schwyz-Stoos” as it is known locally, is a feat of Swiss engineering and technology.
Passengers Stand Upright On the Journey
The futuristic barrel shaped carriages, race up up the mountain at a speed of up to 10 metres a second but despite the velocity and the steep incline, passengers are able to stand upright at all times. In just 4 – 7 minutes you will be whisked to the top in this amazing funicular, a huge improvement on the previous railway. On the journey you gain 744 metres in elevation as the the railway goes from Schwyz-Schlattli to Stoos. The railway is also wheelchair accessible.
