Make Your own Glühwein – Recipe For Mulled Wine
Ingredients
- 1 large orange (you can use two if you prefer)
- I lemon quartered (take 2 strips of lemon zest from the skin)
- 12 cloves
- 2 x 750ml bottles ordinary red wine
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 150g/5½oz sugar – you can use more or less depending on taste
- 250ml – 500ml of orange juice or tap water (use as much or as little according to your taste)
- 1 small measure of brandy, to taste (optional)
Method
Place all the cloves into the skin of the orange and using a peeler zest two slices from the lemon.
Slice the oranges and lemons into half and and put into a large saucepan along with the cinnamon sticks.
Pour the wine (and add the orange juice or water as you prefer) on top.
Bring the mixture just to the boil and add some of the sugar, testing for sweetness. Add as much sugar as you feel necessary then reduce and simmer with the lid on the pan for about 20 minutes. (If you wish add a shot of brandy and bring up the heat once more before straining and serving.)
Strain the mulled wine through a sieve and serve hot into little cups.
You can keep any leftovers in the fridge for up to 24 hours, but it may start fermenting if you keep it longer than that.
