Afternoon Tea at
Les Gourmandises de Miyuko
Asian Styling for a new perspective on Afternoon tea
by Jan de Boer
Nestled in downtown Zurich is a charming little tea house offering a fusion of French patisserie and Japanese style along with a lot of Swiss design and creativity. Les Gourmandises de Miyuko has been running in Zurich for a number of years and Sarah Hochuli and her partner Dominik Grenzler offer a very unique style of afternoon tea. Allowing guests to sample a diverse range of very special cakes and delights, which change daily. As you drink your tea in a sea of Japanease art and décor you are able to appreciate the stunning Asian inspired artwork on show.
Sarah strives to use local ingredients in all the food and each ingredient has been locally sourced and is seasonal. They also offer a range of cakes including gluten free, vegan and non-dairy options.
Miyuko has changed the essence of the classic Afternoon Tea to provide a truly unique experience. They have combined both Afternoon Tea and High Tea to create an afternoon meal which is both refined and satisfying.
We were greeted by very helpful and engaging staff who assisted us in choosing three different types of tea to try as we explored the delights of the “étagère” in front of us. Each tea was selected to complement the delicacies on one of the levels.
The lower level was a fusion of both new and familiar, as we tried various dishes from Africa to Asia. The experience was very interesting as we were unfamiliar with two thirds of the dishes we tried but it all provided for quite a surprising and delightful revelation.
On the second level were the scones, a standard component of the usual Afternoon Tea experience. However Miyuko once again made the dish their own with macha tea infused scones and chocolate chips. It is amazing how a scone can be changed completely with the addition of one or two new ingredients. The third and final level consisted of a delicious array of cakes, each one complimenting what in total was a delicious meal.
The Afternoon Tea at Les Gourmandises de Miyuko is a completely different experience to the usual Afternoon Tea and with the style of the food and the overall presentation they have managed to make an old idea new and engaging. If you fancy an alternative to the typical Afternoon tea, with a hint of Japan and the exotic, then Miyuko is certainly for you.
