If you’re looking for a traditional Swiss cosy, country restaurant this one has to fit the bill. Especially if you visit in Winter when it looks a bit like a fairy dell with lights glowing, fire pits burning and a lovely wooden front door which opens onto a stone hallway and then the main dining room which is full of exposed wooden beams.

Nestled high above Lake Zurich in Herrliberg, we visited the Wirstschaft zur Kittenmühle a few days before Christmas and its warm ambiance made it the perfect setting for a pre-Christmas dinner.

The menu is small but everything is fresh with a resounding Swiss feel to it. Starters consisted of freshly prepared soups, salads or tortellini in a sage butter sauce. We opted for a Nüsslisalat with chopped egg which made for a very generous starter and was fresh and delicious.

The mains consisted of Swiss staples such as Geschnetzeltes (sliced veal in a cream and mushroom sauce) with Rösti, Kalbsleberli (veal liver) with Rösti, Hackbraten (Swiss meat loaf), a trio of steaks with a selection of vegetables or the all you can eat pork ribs and frites. There was also a Meat Fondue (for 2 people) or Zanderfilet as the fish option.

We were a group of four and we chose three different mains – the Geschnetzeltes, the trio of steaks – pork, veal and beef – and the ribs. So who chose best? Well, without exception everyone loved their mains and I must say that having tried a little bit of everyone’s I can see why. The Rösti was crisp and tasty, the Geschnetzeltes tasty and creamy, the steaks were tender and flavoursome, the ribs were crispy and juicy and the frites were my favourite type – long and crispy.

We washed it all down with the local Rauschling and the red Blauburgunder wines which were both available by the glass and went down very well. We were seated close to the roaring fire at the back of the restaurant which we really adored as it was a cold night – however, if you don’t like being cosy and toasty you’d be wise to request a table elsewhere.

The service was happy and friendly and our waitress went to great lengths to explain things we didn’t quite get – and also to gently nudge the person who chose the ribs to go for that second helping of more ribs (and more fries!).

The other thing is that this food is hearty and the portions are generous. We saw some amazing desserts sail past us earlier and had decided that there were some we simply had to try. However, satiety got the better of us and we will have to come back for to try the desserts another time!

If you’re looking for something typically Swiss without being overdone or touristy, this is a great place to take visitors too – and the building itself is gorgeous too. We really enjoyed our evening at the Wirtschaft zur Kittenmühle and we will definitely be going back again – and of course to try those desserts!
