Located at 699 meters above sea level, with panoramic views over the Greifensee and surrounded by beautiful meadowland, the Hotel Restaurant Wassberg occupies a stunning location.

Although very firmly in the countryside, it is in fact only around 20 minutes or so by car and under an hour by Forchbahn from the centre of Zurich, so easily accessible if you are visiting the city. It makes for a distinct change of tempo from the pace of Zurich and the setting, whatever the season is simply idyllic.

The restaurant is open 7 days a week and offers a selection of good quality typically Swiss dishes made from fresh, local ingredients, beautifully presented but without pretension.

As well as having seating inside, if you are lucky enough to visit during the Spring and Summer months (and I dare say early Autumn too), you are able to sit out on the terrace and eat al fresco whilst taking in the lake and countryside views.

We enjoyed a very reasonably priced easy drinking Italian Primitivo along with our meal.

There were three of us eating the evening we dined on the terrace, and we all chose different starters. As it was right in the middle of asparagus season, one of us chose the salad of white and green asparagus with pomegranate (pictured above), and the other two chose the ravioli and the fried perch filets on a citrus and celery salad.

We were all really pleased with our dishes, which were fresh, beautifully presented and extremely tasty. I had the perch which was crispy on the outside and deliciously tender on the inside. One thing to bear in mind though, when you’re choosing from the menu, is that all the portions are quite generous – so make sure you plan accordingly!

Our main courses were also delicious and once again we made three different selections. I went for the beef filet, which was extremely tasty and tender (though maybe a tad overdone for “medium rare” – so perhaps err on the “underdone” side when ordering) and was served with a spaghetti of vegetables and instead of the accompanying potatoes, I chose more veg again!

The next dish was the Zurich classic “Zürcher Geschnetzeltes” (above) which came with a semi circular Rösti and a truly delicious veal and cream sauce. In fact I must say that this was probably one of the best “Geschnelzeltes” that I have ever tasted – that’s how delicious it was!

The third choice was a very tasty lamb rump which was served with polenta.

After both the starter and the main course we really did not need any dessert – but the dessert card was beckoning and in the interests of research dear reader, we succumbed. So what did we chose? I went for an Iced Coffee “coupe” – which was billed as the “mini” portion, but honestly, there really was nothing mini about it at all!

The others chose a fruit and ice cream coupe and something described as  “Kaiserschmorren”.

All were delicious, but I think that the Kaiserschmorren won the day. What is it exactly ? Well, it’s torn up pieces of sweet pancake served with apple pureé and ice cream – and it really is yummy.  Perfect comfort food! A splendid end to a lovely evening.

The other thing I need to mention is that the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming throughout. It turned out I had made the booking for a different date, but despite that they did everything possible to accommodate us and made no fuss at all.

As we finished off our wine we turned towards the lake to take in the beautiful evening views of the Greifensee. So if you’re looking for good quality Swiss food which is local, seasonal and fresh, served in beautiful surroundings, why not head over to the Wassberg in Forch?
