Restaurant Buech Herrliberg – Top Culinary Delights High Above Lake Zurich
Situated at the top of a winding road high above Herrliberg, lies the beautiful Restaurant Buech. Over 100 years old, it is located in what was a former vinter’s house. With sweeping panoramic views over Lake Zurich, it has retained all the rustic charm that makes it look and feel so special.
There are lovely al fresco dining areas in Summer and cows grazing in the field right in front.
As you open the door and step inside you can see lots of old dark wood paneling on the walls, chunky wooden tables and chairs and a beautifully tiled traditional stove.
Little pots of flowers, lovely artwork and stylish table lamps complete the scene.
Arriving for dinner, we were warmly greeted by the manager, Stefan Gunzinger, and after a lovely glass of champagne we began with our starters.
The Starters at Restaurant Buech
We had a baked goats’s cheese salad with figs, baby spinach and acacia honey and raspberry vinegar and pine nuts, and a beef tartare with cress, and they were both excellent.
The tartare, as a starter is very generous in size – but utterly delicious! I must also mention the very fabulous “Buech bread” which is baked specially for the restaurant. It is rustic and chunky and absolutely moreish – you really have to taste it!
Main Courses and Wine at Restaurant Buech
For the main course we had rack of lamb and sautéed veal livers.
Stefan served us a lovely Merlot wine, Il Querceto from The Living Circle in Ticino, to accompany the mains.
The lamb had a delicious herbed crust and came with a thyme jus and wild broccoli and polenta from Ticino. The veal livers were served with sage butter, caramelized apples, spinach and mashed potatoes.
They were both absolutely delicious and we savoured every morsel. Wonderful!
Desserts at Restaurant Buech
We really didn’t need a dessert, but Stefan persuaded us to try just a half portion each – and yes of course, we succumbed! 🙂 We had a coffee ice which was light and refreshing and the homemade strawberry and rhubarb crumble which was a wonderful “comfort food” dish.
We had a truly enjoyable and very memorable evening with exceptional service from Stefan and the whole team. As we were finishing we looked out of the window across the gardens and decided next time we must come for lunch (or in Summer) and sit outside and enjoy the beautiful gardens with all the lovely beech trees and stunning lake views. I can’t wait to return to eat al fresco on a sunny day!
