Vins Vaudois Wine Tasting at Restaurant Widder Zurich
The other week I had the amazing honour of being a member of the wine jury for some amazing Vins Vaudois Wines at the Widder Hotel in Zurich. We were judging white wines for the “Platin-Lorbeeren von Terravin” award and red wines for Trophy Escargot Rouge award. We began our tasting bright and early shortly after meeting at the Widder Hotel in Zurich at 8.30am in the morning!
Selected Top Quality Wines From Canton Vaud
The reason the Vins Terravin wine tasting started early is that we had a lot of wines from Canton Vaud to taste. Each of the wines we were judging had already been highly recommended and had made it though several hurdles to get to this stage. So as you can imagine the wines were of excellent quality! However, it was really interesting to see how the wines varied and how each had its own taste and character.

After the tasting and the winning wines were announced we went for a wonderful lunch prepared by chef Stefan Heilemann at the Restaurant Widder Zurich. There we enjoyed a number of simply delicious dishes accompanied, of course, by the most amazing Vins Vaudois wines.
The wines and the food went together magnificently and we had some wonderful sweets (see below) afterwards too.
Vaud – The Second Largest Wine Growing Region in Switzerland
The wines from Canton Vaud are very important in the history of Swiss winemaking, as Vaud is the second largest wine growing region in Switzerland. Chasselas is the dominant grape variety and their wines are well known all over Switzerland and have excelled for years. However, as we were to discover, Canton Vaud also produce an amazing selection of red wines too!
Philippe Herminjard, the CEO of Terravin wines was present at our tasting. Terravin is a quality stamp certifying the best white wine of the canton Vaud. Around 40 professional wine tasters are responsible for controlling the wines applying for this quality stamp. Only 50 – 65% of the wines submitted actually ever get the quality stamp.
Platin-Lorbeeren Terravin

The Platin-Lorbeeren Terravin is the top honour for any wine from Canton Vaud and just twice a year the Platin-Lorbeeren prize is awarded to the best wine of the region. The Platin-Lorbeeren von Terravin is an award solely for white wines. The Winner of the Platin-Lorbeeren prize was the Cave du Consul by Laurent et Nicolas Martin, La Cote AOC, Perroy Grand cru, Bérollon Le Consul 2021. You can see details of it online here.
Trophy Escargot Rouge
For red wines there is now the Trophy Escargot Rouge.
The Escargot Rouge trophy was awarded this year for the very first time and there were 2 categories, one for the original and one for the Category “Sélection” which has been matured in barrels for longer.
The winning red wines were:
- Category Original: Helix, Vaud AOC, ORIGINAL, 2020 – available online here
- Category Sélection: Domaine Le Luissalet, Vaud AOC, SÉLECTION, 2020 – available online here
So if you get the chance to try these wines I highly recommend you do so. I was really impressed with the quality and I will even be drinking Escargot Rouge with my Christmas lunch this year!
