The Butcher and His Daughter Restaurant Zurich
The Butcher burger restaurant is well known amongst meat eaters for its juicy burgers, but now the Wiesner family has now opened a brand new restaurant in Zurich which is completely different! The Butcher and His Daughter is a new kind of restaurant – one that caters for meat eaters (and burger lovers!) – but also for vegans, vegetarians and even lacto-ovo-vegetarians.
As Daniel Wiesner explained to us, the story behind the restaurant is that the Butcher’s daughter came back from her travels in Canada with lots of new exciting ideas. She managed to persuade her father, Joe the Butcher, to open a different type of restaurant – one which caters for meat eaters and burger lovers – but also for those who prefer plant based food. The Butcher’s daughter eats meat, but is also a fan of vegan and vegetarian dishes too. Therefor the restaurant’s menu offers something for everyone, except on Tuesdays, when the menu is completely plant based all day. It’s a great concept as it is a lot more accommodating for friends, families and groups, as it caters to almost all dietary requirements.
The Restaurant is very inviting. It is beautifully decorated in greens and pinks and is very light, bright and comfortable. Daniel explained that many of the design ideas come from Canada (the main lamps for example do actually come from there) and there are a few little flourishes with the wall art and the pink designs reminiscent of Sketch in London.
As well as seating in the main restaurant there is a lovely outdoor area at the back where you can eat and relax in the open air.
I especially like the bar area which is colourful and bright.
Cocktails then Starters
In fact we began the evening with one of the beautiful cocktails before trying out some of the starters, many of which were plant based.
As well as alcoholic cocktails, they also have some really tasty non-alcoholic ones which not only looked good but tasted good too. Out of the starters, my favourite was actually the plant based tartare (above) but the tandoori roasted cauliflower (below) was delicious and came a close second.
The menu offers a good selection of starters as well as salad bowls and seasonal vegetables.
There is a whole section in the menu on chicken (and here you have the choice of plant based chicken if you prefer, which is surprisingly good) and then burgers and desserts. The burgers feature both meat and vegan burgers and of course not forgetting the French fries, which come either truffle cream and greens or with their oriental spice mix and hummus. The meat and most of the ingredients are all sourced in Switzerland and one of the things that the company have been spending a lot of time and energy doing, is trying to reduce their carbon footprint.
When it comes to desserts you really are spoilt for choice! There are marshmallows which you can roast on a little grill on the table, a vegan cheesecake, or my favourite which is the hot chocolate cake.
I did’t try the ice cream lollies – but they come in yogurt and mango, strawberry and lemon and chocolate and cherry and they looked pretty amazing. The presentation of the chocolate cake was fabulous and they even have a 3D printer to create the chocolate logo!
It’s a very friendly place and and we had a really fun and relaxing evening. It’s a great place to meet up with friends and although they don’t do brunch yet, this may be something they will be considering in the future. So if you want to try something a little different in a relaxing comfortable atmosphere with lots of different options, why not pop down and visit the Butcher and His Daughter? Don’t forget though, Tuesdays, are plant based only days!
