The Japanese By The Chedi Andermatt – Restaurant in Andermatt
The World’s Highest Michelin Star Japanese Restaurant
Gourmet Japanese Food at Altitude
Just last week we were re-visiting the beautiful Hotel Chedi in Andermatt when we were invited to have lunch at the world’s highest Japanese restaurant called “The Japanese by The Chedi”.
It is located directly on the slopes in the ski resort of Andermatt, next to the Gütsch Express gondola station and is accessible for skiers and non-skiers alike.
The World’s Highest Japanese Restaurant with a Michelin star
The restaurant is beautifully decorated with lots of wood and sleek lines.
Whilst we were there we learnt that the restaurant, which has 14 GaultMillau points, had just been awarded a Michelin Star – so it was definitely an excuse to raise a glass to toast this good news!
So now The Japanese by The Chedi Andermatt has become the world’s highest-altitude Japanese restaurant to be awarded a Michelin star!
Executive Chef Dietmar Sawyere
Executive Chef, Dietmar Sawyere, who already has a Michelin star (as well as 16 GaultMillau points) for the Hotel’s main Japanese restaurant, called “The Japanese”, is the mastermind behind this restaurant. He has previously worked at the Dorchester and the Savoy in London and was delighted at the news of the Michelin star saying “The Michelin star for The Japanese by The Chedi Andermatt gives me great satisfaction. It is the highest recognition for a cuisinier. It honours the art that we celebrate daily, and the passion for Japanese cuisine that we live and that we impart to our guests”.

The mountaintop restaurant at Gütsch sits at 2344 m above sea level. As you enjoy your Japanese fine dining experience you can take in the stunning panoramic views of the Gotthard Massif, the Oberalp Pass and the Ursern Valley.
The Japanese delicacies on offer include shidashi bentō, omakase and kaiseki menus, sushi and tempura specialties.
The menu also has its own authentic interpretation of “shidashi bentō”, so that you can enjoy a Japanese Bento Box directly on the slopes. Because of the Covid regulations we weren’t able to sit inside the beautifully designed 38 seater restaurant but we were able to enjoy our meal “al fresco” on the restaurant terrace which offers a further 34 seats outside.
Once the restaurant is open again you will be able to enjoy a sushi and sashimi bar with some of the finest fish creations, including the signature dish Black Cod. To wash it all down there are 110 varieties of sake to choose from.
Andermatt – A Swiss Gourmet Hot Spot
So Andermatt is really turning into a gourmet destination as The Restaurant Gütsch by Markus Neff, which is also located on Andermatt’s Mount Gütsch, was awarded a Michelin star this year too. Andermatt is therefore not just a ski destination but has rapidly become a gourmet hotspot in the Swiss Alps too!
