Christophe Cervasel and Atelier Cologne in Zurich
Christophe Cervasel is passionate about perfume. The founder of Atelier Cologne, we met the other week at the Atelier Cologne Perfume Workshop at Jelmoli Department store in Zurich, where he explained how he founded the perfume company. An engaging raconteur, he told us all about the story behind the company and his drive to produce high quality perfumes.
Atelier Cologne – A Partnership of Passion
Atelier Cologne came into being after a meeting with fellow parfumeur Sylvie Ganter. Not only did the two decide to get married, but both being incredibly passionate about perfume, they chose to form a company together, at the same time. One that was dedicated to Cologne.
So in 2009 the perfume house was founded and in the intervening years the couple have created their very popular range of ‘Cologne Absolues’, which combine the freshness of an Eau de Cologne, with the intensity of an Eau de Parfum. There are 32 perfumes in the collection and each one takes about three years to produce.
A Perfume Wardrobe
However, Christophe is adamant that you should think about perfume in the way you think about your clothes. He explained that you should have a ”wardrobe of perfumes” to change into, according to your mood, just like you have a wardrobe of clothes.
It actually makes sense that the perfume you feel like in the morning, as you’re rushing out of the house to a meeting, is not necessarily the same one you feel like wearing in the evening for a relaxed night out. At the weekend or on holiday, maybe you feel like a different fragrance again. He told me that three fragrances is probably the basis for your “wardrobe of perfumes” to deal with day to day life and to feel at ease.
High Concentration of Essential Oils
He explained that you need a high concentration of essential oils to create a perfectly balanced cologne and that due to the fact that there is a high percentage of natural oils it is important to try the perfumes on your skin. Different people’s skin react in different ways to each perfume. The colognes are priced according to the ingredients used, which is something I had not really considered before – but is actually very logical.
In Store Embossing
The Atelier Cologne perfumes come in a variety of sizes but one of the nicest touches is that if you buy a large size cologne, you automatically get a free travel size too.
In fact the travel size can be protected by a beautiful leather case which is available in a wide range of beautiful colours and which you can have embossed on site in Jelmoli, with your name or wording of your choice. A fabulous way of protecting small perfumes when you travel.
The Most Popular Atelier Cologne Perfumes
So which I asked, is the most popular in Zurich? Orange Sanguine apparently. And which one is the most popular worldwide? Well that one is the Santal Carmin.
