Swiss watchmaker Mondaine is synonymous with the Railway Clock or the “SBB Bahnhofsuhr” design, which is elegant, simple and easy to read. The official Swiss train station clock design was created in 1944 by Hans Hilfiker and in 1986 the first Mondaine watch was introduced.

The company have now unveiled a new development with their latest range of watches which goes by the name “Essence”. Appropriately enough the launch of this new range took place at Hiltl’s Pflanzbar in Zurich, which was filled with greenery and lush plants. Very fitting, considering that plant power goes into the manufacture of these watches!

With the new Essence series, Mondaine is creating environmentally friendly watches based on totally renewable raw materials.  In fact 70% of the components are renewable and the watch casing, believe it or not, is made using castor oil! It’s a real step forward for environmental conservation and a great innovation in the international watch industry.

As well as castor oil for the casing, natural rubber is used for the the watch strap and the packaging is made of recycled PET.

Mondaine is demonstrating with this new line that their watches are not just beautiful and useful time pieces, but they offer a new way forward for the time keeping industry, demonstrating their commitment to try to conserve the earth’s valuable resources. With the iconic “Essence Bahnhofsuhr SBB”, Mondaine are stealing a march in the watch industry.

The watches come with either a black or white face and in two sizes, large and small. They are also quite practical as they are waterproof up to 3 metres. Having tested out the larger version in white I must say that the watches are very light, easy to wear, with a great design and are superb for telling the time (even from a distance!) as the face is so clear.

The watches go on sale in November 2017 and will cost CHF 170. For more information please visit the Mondaine website here.
