Vivace Microneedling at SkinApart Zurich
Katja Block, SkinApart
The other week I was invited to try out a new beauty treatment at SkinApart, the cosmetic studio run by Katja Block and located very close to Zurich’s Stadelhofen station. The treatment is called “Vivace” and is aimed at rejuvenating and revitalising your skin.
From the age of thirty our skin starts losing elasticity and can begin to show fine lines and wrinkles. The older you get, the more your skin begins to show the effects of age. Vivace is a new treatment which aims to combat these signs of ageing in a very innovative way. It can be used on all skin types and even on sensitive areas such as around the eye.
Vivace – A Combination of Micro Needling & Radio Frequency Energy
Vivace is not just micro needling. It is a combination of micro-needling and radio frequency energy so it is more effective in smoothing and refining the complexion. As well as working on wrinkles and fine lines, this procedure also works wonders on acne scars and large pores.
The Vivace Machine
On my arrival at SkinApart cosmetics studio I was warmly welcomed by Katja Block who has been working in this field for over 20 years. Katja explained to me how this new 2-in-1 treatment rejuvenates the skin and improves the complexion by using these 2 technologies to activate the body’s own collagen and elastin production. “Since this treatment gets under the skin, visible differences can be achieved,” Katja told me.
A Treatment Using Heat and LED light
There are two types of light which can be used: the red LED is used for skin rejuvenation and the blue LED is used for the treatment of acne.

Vivace Has Many Uses
Microneedling is a minimally invasive skincare treatment which stimulates “wound healing,” and the body’s natural reaction resulting in the production of collagen. Microneedling is well known and has been around for centuries, most commonly known for its use in acupuncture. The benefits of microneedling are that it boosts collagen, promotes healthy circulation, and helps to tighten and lift skin. In addition Microneedling can be used to treat acne scars, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, and even stretch marks. In the case of Vivace where Microneedling is combined with Radio Frequency Energy, the results are usually considerably better than with microneedling alone.
Vivace can be used for the following treatments:
- Skin tightening / lifting and tightening
- Skin rejuvenation
- Inflammatory acne
- Acne scars
- Fine and deep wrinkles
- Nasolabial folds
- Pore size reduction
I can honestly tell you that the treatment was easy, (almost) painless and much quicker than I had anticipated. To begin with Katja cleansed and peeled my face using products from the Swiss company Forma Omnimedica. Next she glided over the parts of my face she had decided needed the most attention (my jawline and my forehead) with a sterilized applicator with ultra-fine, gold-plated needles.
The needles are inserted into the skin, causing microscopic inflammation. The needle length varies between 0.5 – 3.5 mm and the fine texture allows for a gentle treatment with little to no pain. Because of this, the radio frequency energy warms the deep tissues and the body’s own wound healing is activated. This creates new collagen and elastin and as a result the skin is tightened and wrinkles are prevented.
The tool itself looks like a large pen, but you can’t really see the needles. Katja worked in sections on my face, and as she went over my skin, she would apply a custom blended serum so that my skin would absorb the benefits throughout the process. This Cool Relax “cocktail” contains a deuterium-free water with gold particles and a specially mixed hyaluronic antioxidant serum which penetrates the layers of the skin by means of fine electric shocks.
A Very Painless Experience
Although I don’t really mind needles, I don’t love them either. However, although I could feel tiny movements across my skin, I didn’t find it at all invasive or uncomfortable. To be honest the only time I could really feel anything was when Katja was working on and around my lip line, which I guess must be a super-sensitive area.
Virtually No Downtime
One of my concerns about the treatment was any possible downtime. After the treatment I had visions of a swollen, red face and having to stay inside and avoid the outside world for a number of days! However, in actual fact I had virtually no after effects at all. After the treatment my face seemed taughter, firmer and slightly plumped – but in no way swollen or red. In fact I left the beauty salon just as pale as I had arrived. To see the full results you really need to wait 3 months, and although a single treatment can help, for impressive results you really need 4 to 6 treatments.
After the treatment, Katja offered me the option of a light covering of make up, but since I was going straight home on the train (and needed to wear a mask anyway) I didn’t see the need. For the next 3-4 days Katja told me I needed to wear a high factor SPF sunscreen and to avoid being in the sun.
Vivace Can Also Be Used To Treat Scars
One thing that is useful to know is that Vivace is not just for skin rejuvenation, it also has beneficial effects in pore reduction and can be successfully used in the treatment of acne and acne scars.
How does a Professional Treatment differ from At-home Rollers?
At-home derma-rollers have been on the market, for a while now but can be a danger to your skin if not used correctly and not cleaned properly. Microneedling at a beautician’s like SkinApart is far more effective than the at-home version due to the type of equipment they use. A professional treatment has the optimum hygiene standards and the treatment goes far deeper into the layers of skin lading to better results. In addition it is performed by a trained professional who knows what they are doing. If an at-home dermaroller is not cleaned properly and bacteria is present, the roller can infect your pores and you could end up with a skin infection.
Matrix Rythmus Therapy
Whilst I was there Katja also allowed me to try out a treatment called Matrix Rhythmus. The treatment was developed by Dr Ulrich Randoll. It is also known as bio mechanical muscle stimulation and has been recognised for many years for the treatment, prevention, recovery and rehabilitation of a number of painful conditions such as circulatory problems, swelling and muscle tension.
Katja has had amazing success with her patients using Matrix Rhythms Therapy and since I was recovering from a shoulder operation, she suggested I try it. It certainly was very pleasant indeed and not only did I feel better afterwards but my shoulder was less painful too.
