Zibelemärit – Annual Onion Market in Bern
An interesting Swiss tradition is the Zibelemärit or Onion Market which usually takes place on the fourth Monday in November every year in Bern. This year it will take place on Monday 23rd November 2026.
The whole of the Bundesplatz is taken over with this celebration and it becomes a giant marketplace for onions! In addition lots of the restaurants and stalls sell onion soup, onion tarts and other onion delicacies – so this really is a super onion day!
Onions In All Guises
Farmers from miles around come to display their wares and there are hundreds of stalls with onions in all sorts of incarnations. You can buy plaited strings of onions, decorated onions, onion dolls, onion toys in fact almost “onion-everything”. Bern really turns into an onion city for the day with a light hearted and fun feel to it. It starts early though as everything gets going from 5 o’clock in the morning!
Martinmas Market
It all harks back to a 14-day autumn market called Martinmas which was first held back in 1439, but it’s a tradition that is still reincarnated on the 4th Monday in November every year. So if you’re interested in all things onion and in Swiss traditions, this is definitely a market worth exploring!
