Siren Testing in Switzerland – First Wednesday of every February

The annual civil defence siren testing takes place the first Wednesday in February every year between 1.30pm and 3pm. Switzerland has 8500 mobile and stationary civil-defence sirens, which can alert 99% of the population. It’s just a test in case they ever need them in a real emergency. You don’t need to do anything except cover your ears – unless of course you hear them going off outside this date!

There are two alarm signals
At 1.30 p.m. you will hear the “General Alarm” signal sounded across the whole of Switzerland, an ascending and descending tone, which lasts for one minute. It is then repeated once more after a two-minute interval. Sometimes they continue testing the sirens till 2 p.m.. From 2.15 p.m. to 3 p.m. (at the latest), the “Water Alarm” signal is tested in those areas near dams. This is a different alarm lasting 20 seconds and repeated at 10 second intervals and is made up of twelve low continuous tones. In total approximately  7,800 sirens are tested across Switzerland.

Cinema

There are plenty of cinemas in Zurich, around 16 at the last count and many of them with several screens. You can find lots of films in the original English soundtrack – but make sure when you book that is says Edf – which means English with German (Deutsch) and French subtitles) – a capital D means that the movie is in German! Bargain tip: On Mondays all seats are reduced price in all cinemas in Zurich.

More information on our Cinema Page

Every Summer there is an Openair Cinema in Zurich and it is located next to China Gardens at the Zurichhorn. Read more about it here.
